10 things we learned from James Gunn’s LIVE Facebook Guardians of the Galaxy Q&A

James Gunn, director of Marvel‘s Guardians of the Galaxy, took to Facebook last Thursday for his first-ever live Q&A commentary during a social media screening of the film. Here are our favorite highlights from the session, ten things we learned about the making of the film:

10. On choosing the soundtrack…

“I got a lot of pressure not to use Ain’t No Mountain, because it’s been used a lot. But it’s hard to find a song that’s a love song that works as a message from a dead mother to her son. It’s just perfect.”

9. The hardest scene to write was…

The first Thanos scene on Sanctuary

8. The scene with Peter Quill’s mother was just as heart-breaking in real life…

“Laura, the actress who played Meredith (Quill), recorded her lines for the letter in a car with me on a small recording device. I cried in the car with her! We thought we’d have to redo the performance but it was perfect so we kept it in – those lines, read in a car, on set in London.

7. The person responsible for the use of the term “turdblossom”…

“Chris Pratt”

6. On what actually happened to Nebula…

“Sometimes people are confused what happens to Nebula. She looks down for something to fall on, allows herself to fall on a Ravager craft, and takes out the Goth Ravager inside and flies away, leaving everyone to deal with this shit themselves, because she’s stopped caring. She will be back.”

5. His favorite scene…

“Drax petting Rocket is my very favorite moment in the movie and I cry every time I see it. I’m even getting teary now.

4. His inspiration behind the Groot spore scene…

“I really like the Groot spore scene. It was inspired by the snow in Edward Scissorhands. I also love the magical score by Tyler Bates.

3. On Rocket’s “I need that guy’s leg” prank:

“I just like to send characters down roads we don’t expect. And Rocket’s an asshole who would use any opportunity for a practical joke.”

2. The ‘real’ message of Guardians is…

“None of us are as bad as we think we are.

1. and finally, Groot’s dance moves are Gunn’s own dance moves!

As people know, that is me doing the baby Groot dance. I was alone in a room with a camera. I never watched the footage after I recorded it, just sent it to the VFX folks at MPC and told them to make him dance just like this. My friends who saw an early screening recognized my dance style without knowing it was me!”
