7 Playstyles to Spice Up Your Game in Fallout 76

I have ⌠a lot of hours in Fallout 76. Iâve found all the POIs, completed all the quests, gotten most of the rewards for all of the events, yet I keep coming back to it. A large part of that is because there is no one way to play the game, and it’s easy to switch things up. Thereâs so much to do, so many roles to play, and you donât have to min-max your build to access it all.
So perhaps youâve gotten to a point where youâre asking, Whatâs next? Here are seven ways to help you spice things up.
The Junk Merchant
Itâs easy to open a vendor in your C.A.M.P., so most everyone does it. But that means a lot of people are selling things you might already have (outside of some of the more rare plans, especially the ones exclusive to seasonal events). What everyone does need, especially in the early game, is junk. Junk scraps can be used to craft everything in the game from weapons, mods, armor, C.A.M.P. decoration, resource collectors, and more. So if you can spare the scraps, load up your vendor and see how quickly your fellow Wastelanders clear it out â if you price them fairly.
The junk to collect and sell the fastest mostly aligns with weapon crafting and popular C.A.M.P. items, so aluminum, screws, and oil always sell like sweet rolls. There are several aluminum nodes across the world where you can place, via your C.A.M.P., a resource collector. Floater Flamer Pus Sacs and Cooking Oil can net you plenty of oil for crafting all those lights and lanterns around your home. As for screws, you can gather a couple hundred of them during the nuclear event A Colossal Problem if you tag the wendigos. Just donât forget to loot them all before you escape the mine.
The Philanthropist
When you have everything, it might be time to give back. Here are a few ideas for how you can become the Wastelandâs favorite philanthropist.
Donation bins are scattered around the open world. The most popular ones are the bin right outside of Vault 76 where new characters first step into the world and the bin right outside the Whitespring Mall. The inventory inside of these bins are shared, so whatever you put in, someone else can take out.
If youâre an endgame Vault Dweller and you have a hard time keeping those caps below the maximum, instead of buying junk, pop some Grape Mentats and buy the serum recipes from the Whitespring Bunker and resell them at a much more reasonable price.
Build all the resource collectors you have available and keep them unlocked. Most people do this, but itâs helpful for those daily S.C.O.R.E. challenges.
Drop some supplies for lower levels you come across. Level 20s canât carry a stack of 600 Stimpaks and nobody needs your Plan: Single-Action Revolver Ivory Grip. But if you have some Canned Meat Stew or a Leader Bobblehead on you, then theyâll be able to get an XP buff to level up faster. Or you can drop your Loose Screws. Everyone always needs some screws. Iâll take your screws.
The Cook/Chemist/Moonshiner
Players always appreciate vendors who sell their desired buffs so they donât have to go hunting for the materials to craft them themselves. Play the role of a chef and cook up the best canned meals. For Herbivores, Gut Shroom Soup gives a nice bonus XP buff, Aged Mirelurk Queen Steak gives a whopping 8 extra points to Endurance, and Megasloth Mushroom Soup gives a bonus to critical damage. For Carnivores, Poached Angler gives a bonus to Max AP, Ribeye Steak will increase your carry weight, and Tasty Squirrel Stew gives you an XP bonus.
Or become a chemist and put the more popular chems up for sale, like Psychobuff and, in particular, Berry Mentats, which require more difficult to acquire ingredients but provide a bonus to Intelligence (therefore XP) and highlights living targets. Just donât forget to equip the Chemist perk to double your yield.
Finally, you can be a moonshiner, brewing up those alcoholic buffs for your fellow Wastelanders. If youâve put in the grind to do Bivâs daily quest, Tipsy Taste-Test, then you may have some unique crafting recipes you canât find anywhere else, like Nuka Cola Dark and Ballistic Bock, which are commonly in demand. People who havenât put in the grind might buy your stash just because theyâve never even heard of a Tick Blood Tequila Margarita. I mean, who could resist?
The Raid Leader
If youâre in the endgame and youâve been around the Gleaming Depths block, lower levels are always looking for someone to teach them how to run the raids. Even higher levels whoâve been nervous about giving them a go could be open to learning from someone who wonât fault them for not magically knowing how to do everything perfectly on the first go-around. Each stage has its own mechanics and challenges. Since youâre in a team of only four, it can feel monumental if you make a mistake. So be the friendly face you wanted to see in the world when you were lower level and teach them a thing or two. Youâll all get some nice rewards in the process.
The Cryptid Hunter
The best thing about the Appalachian setting are the cryptids â irradiated mutants that imitate creatures of folk legend. Some show up at events (some exclusively, like Bigfoot â though I couldnât seem to get a photo that wasnât blurry), but most can be found in the open world. The Sheepsquatch even has its own very engaging questline, which you can start by interacting with the SHEEPSQUATCH ATE MY BROTHER! posters at any train station.
And if hunting the cryptids isnât your style, perhaps joining a cult dedicated to, say, the Mothman is more your speed. See the world through his eyes, children.
The First Responder
Support roles arenât strictly necessary in this MMORPG, but itâs a fun, relaxed way to mix things up at events. Slap the 1-star Medicâs mod onto your weapon and you can be the unsung hero of events where you have to keep NPCs alive. Itâs particularly important during Radiation Rumble where four scavengers can outright die â causing the event to fail â instead of being able to get revived like during the Test Your Metal event. Also keep an eye out for other players who get downed and need revives â youâll be able to tell by the panicking Vault Boy emote if someone needs a hand.
Aside from healing, being able to apply cryo damage is a hugely noticeable asset to boss fights, like Scorched Earth. Apply enough cryo damage and you can slow the Scorchbeast Queen down significantly, which can keep her on the ground for longer periods of time. Thank you, Cold Shoulder wielders.
The Collector
There are some items in the game that have such low spawn/drop rates that they become highly sought-after collectorâs items. If you happen to find a Red Asylum Dress at Fort Defiance, notice a Tattered Field Jacket in your inventory after completing an activity, or acquire a glowing mask from the Fashnacht event, then you have something special on your hands. You can either wear it, display it in your C.A.M.P. as a trophy, or trade it for another rare item youâre after. Thereâs a lot out there to collect, so if you like the idea of being able to show off your winnings, this will keep you occupied for a good long time.
