Get ready to meet today’s featured curator, Michelle G. from Sideshow’s Customer Support team! Here’s what she had to say about what scary good pieces of pop culture get her heart racing!
Please introduce yourself to our audience.
Oh hi! My name is Michelle G., I am a Customer Service pup and am just approaching my 5th year at Sideshow!
What would you say are your three favorite pop culture fandoms/licenses? Why do you like them, and how you connect to them as a fan?
HORROR, HORROR, and more HORROR! You’d be hard pressed to find a film genre with a more loving and accepting community. We ALL share the same adrenaline rushes and devastating highs and lows that come with viewing the things that scare us.
You will never feel more alive than after a good fright, and it brings you back down to terra firma where you kiss the ground and thank the universe that you are safe and sound…..until the nightmares come, that is!
MUSIC, and if I can be specific, electronic music. Drum machines CAN have soul, and the masterminds behind bands such as Devo, Kraftwerk, Air, etc. all carry the same love of geekdom.
These are generally not your big men on campus… they are the kids who wanted a Casio synth over an electric guitar, and will spend hours trying to perfect 1 sustained note to sound like an alien spaceship landing when the big bright world is moving along as normal outside. Electronic music is the sound of our dreams, and often creates the best soundtracks for horror, and also…SCI-FI.
SCI-FI (Science Fiction). Every great Sci-Fi film, novel, television show, etc. is grounded in some basis of reality. It’s the other worlds out there that parallel our own, in obvious or extreme ways. If we humans can dream about going to visit the stars, we have to give thanks to Sci-Fi pioneers who put these dreams to page and screen.
It’s scary and beautiful at the same time, and often leads us to appreciate distant lands, cultures…visions, all out there in the universe. In a perfect world, we should all appreciate each other here on earth in the same way.
What from our catalogue would you recommend for likeminded collectors? What personally inspires you?
Recommendation #1: Headless Horseman and Ichabod Figurine (Enesco) -The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow is American Gothic at its finest and most accessible! The amazing cartoon narrated by Bing Crosby is STILL a staple in my home every Halloween, ever since I first watched it on a dubbed VHS tape as a child.
I truly feel as though this tale began my love of horror, and to have the terrifying showdown captured in collectible form is a dream come true, not just for Disney fans, but fans of all things that go bump in the night!
Recommendation #2: Hand of Sight Vinyl Collectible (Mighty Jaxx)– This STUNNING vinyl piece is visually haunting to me, as the bright colors are almost a defense between the light and the dark. On both sides of the coin, the Hand of Sight can tend towards good and evil.
For instance, I am reminded of a story by Stephen King called “I am the Doorway”. In it, a former astronaut who circled Venus finds that he brought something back with him… eyes on the palm of his hand which can see all in a distorted nightmare version of reality, and thus drive him to do harm others and eventually himself. As one cannot exist without the other (Good and Evil), the Hand of Sight is not only a collectible… it is a shield.
Recommendation #3: Miss Mindy Mary Poppins Musical Figurine (Enesco)– This is pure nostalgia for me, so I am a tad biased! I watched Mary Poppins literally EVERY DAY when I was very young, with no complaints from my mom as she got a kick out of her little one liking a somewhat more mature version of a fairy tale. The music alone… I’m not crying, you’re crying! It was ahead of its time for me, and some of the subject matter pertaining to the relationship with the mom and dad went right over my head!
This music box figurine from the “dream sequence” (though in Mary’s world I imagine this could have taken place in reality, of course), captures the stunning beauty of Mary Poppins herself when she transcends the barrier and brings magic to those around her.
Come back tomorrow- Friday, July 24th- for another featured Atomic Misfit curator from the Sideshow Team, as a part of the Sideshow Con 2020 celebration!
