The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Teaser Is Finally Here!

By Sideshow on Mar 21, 2024

Today’s the Day-O! The first official teaser for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel, has risen from the dead. Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice), Winona Ryder (Lydia Deetz), and Catherine O’Hara (Delia Deetz) will return alongside Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci in this freshly exorcised next installment of Betelgeuse’s bio-exorcist antics.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice haunts theaters on September 6. Watch the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice teaser trailer below and then keep reading for an in-depth breakdown!

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Admittedly, this is a teaser in the truest sense of the word. Details are dead, dead, dead. But we do get glimpses of Lydia Deetz, her mother Delia Deetz, and Lydia’s daughter Astrid. Plus, a mysterious new character named Rory joins them. They are attending a funeral service in a cemetery full of tombstones, presumably for a member of the family. In the background, a hauntingly slow choral version of Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” sets the eerie mood.

Shots of Astrid are interspersed throughout the teaser. Much like her mother, she rides her bicycle past Miss Shannon’s School for Girls. She even drives across the Winter River bridge that sent Barbara and Adam Maitland plummeting to their untimely death. Next, we see her ascend the same stairs that Lydia walked up back in 1988. Will Astrid be the one who helps reawaken the Ghost with the Most, Beetlejuice himself?

Beetlejuice Is Back!

There’s also a scene where Lydia approaches the Maitlands’ Winter River town model. It seems the Deetz family kept this relic around, even though they know the danger it promises. After all, this was how Beetlejuice first appeared to Lydia and convinced her to summon him for help.

Judging by her face, Lydia Deetz is possibly surprised at Beetlejuice’s return. At the very least, she’s horrified. What could he want this time around and how will the Deetz family fare against him without the help of the Maitlands’ ghosts? One thing’s for sure. The juice is loose.

The Deetz Family vs Beetlejuice

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tim Burton revealed the funeral we see in the teaser trailer is indeed for someone in the family. Other than that, the identity of the deceased remains a mystery. This event does set things in motion for the sequel film, however.

Burton explains that the crux of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be the intergenerational relationships between Lydia, Delia, and Astrid. Other stars in the film will include Willem Dafoe and Arthur Conti. The little “2024 A.D.” on the title card is a reference to Burton’s favorite Dracula movie, Dracula A.D. 1972. What’s dead is dead — but that doesn’t mean it always stays dead.
