Benedict Cumberbatch is Marvel’s new Doctor.

Thanks to io9, we now know just how badly Marvel wanted Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Steven Strange. Marvel made the offer to Cumberbatch and found out that he had already committed to playing Hamlet in a UK production at the Barbican theater that would conflict with the Fall 2015 shooting schedule.

Marvel, undeterred, pushed the production dates. The film originally slated for summer 2016, got a new release date of November 4th and they got Cumberbatch.

At one time, Marvel apparently considered Joaquin Phoenix, Ryan Gosling, and Jared Leto, but it seems Benedict Cumberbatch’s mystical powers were so good, he shifted time.

According to Marvel, there was only one Doctor Strange.
