Water, fire, earth, and air all have their own distinct disciplines, and in-world political conflicts lead to explosive battles between benders. And only the Avatar can master all four techniques.

The storytelling possibility of animation is pretty limitless, capturing wildly imaginative and carefully choreographed clashes between heroes like Aang, Katara, Toph, and Sokka versus the seemingly omnipresent villains of the Fire Nation. But loyalties change, lessons are learned, and the series keeps fans on the edge of their seats with iconic fights, shocking betrayals, and evolutions to the very nature of element bending.

As we anticipate the upcoming premiere of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, let’s revisit some of the best fight scenes from the original series — chosen for narrative significance, visual excitement, and sheer destruction.

10. Mai and Ty Lee Betray Azula in “The Boiling Rock Pt. 2”

While it’s no surprise the majority of the best fights in the series involve bombastic element bending choreography, martial artists Mai and Ty Lee deserve recognition for this incredible feat of strength. As two of the three members of Team Azula, these young women accompanied their firebending ally through many encounters with Team Avatar. However, their standoff at the Boiling Rock prison definitely charts as one of the most shocking betrayals not only of the Avatar series, but in animation in general.

Helping her ex-boyfriend Zuko to escape the prison with rescued refugees, Mai singlehandedly fends off a small platoon of Fire Nation soldiers. This battle itself is pretty noteworthy, as Mai is not a bender. Her lethal markswoman abilities allow her to hold back the attackers until Azula arrives with Ty Lee in tow. Azula is ready to fight her former friend (likely to the death) but the battle ends before it begins when Ty Lee uses a few well-placed strikes to completely block Azula’s chi paths. This effectively removes her ferocious bending ability for a minute, causing the Firebender to fall to the floor limp, decrying the sudden dissent of her two closest companions.

9. Sokka vs. Swordmaster Piandao in “Sokka’s Master”

Another battle showing the strength of non-benders in the ATLA universe, this duel between Sokka and the Fire Nation swordmaster Piandao is a fantastic culmination of the Water Tribesman’s character arc through the series. When his tribe was initially decimated by Fire Nation invaders, young Sokka was forced to become “the man of the house” way too soon. He was full of undisciplined machismo, armed with his trusty boomerang. But by the time he meets Master Piandao, he has matured and grown more humble, willing to learn from other warriors far and wide.

However, after confessing that he is from the Southern Water Tribe, the master engages Sokka in a duel that seems fueled by the age-old nation rivalry. Sokka uses a black meteorite blade he has forged for himself, demonstrating all of the skills his master has instilled in him. And while the two are evenly matched for a time, Piandao gets the upper hand before Sokka’s bending allies try to join the battle. Sokka submits, sheathing his sword before Piandao reveals he already knew of Sokka’s heritage by his name, stating that the art of the sword does not simply belong to one nation alone. The two bow to one another before the master asserts that the young man will grow to surpass him one day if he continues to train with discipline.

8. Toph vs Xin Fu in “The Blind Bandit”

While this entry could have easily been Toph’s hilarious “fight” with the wrestler known as the Boulder, this more serious, high-stakes fight cements the young, blind Earthbender’s place as one of the most powerful characters our young heroes have encountered. Toph Beifong is the daughter of incredibly rich parents, who believe their child to be weak and in need of protection due to her disability. But nothing could be further from the truth, as evidenced by her swift takedown of all the combatants at the Earth Rumble underground tournament in the city of Gaoling.

When Xin Fu, the tournament master, not only holds Toph for ransom but also tries to turn Aang over to the Fire Nation for reward, the young Earthbender defeats every wrestler to free the team. This battle shows her formidable “seismic sense” bending style, utilizing the earth’s natural vibrations to exactly pinpoint her foes. Toph’s moves are strong, precise, and relentless. And the animation changes uniquely to show her connection to the earth by reflecting white radar lines on a blackened background (reminiscent of Marvel’s Daredevil using his senses to stop crime). Onlookers even declare Toph to be the greatest Earthbender due to her highly refined connection with the element.

7. The Final Combustion Man Battle in “The Western Air Temple”

Combustion Man, also known as Sparky Sparky Boom Man, proved an intensely formidable foe for Team Avatar in their travels. This silent Fire Nation bounty hunter tracked our heroes through multiple locations before a fateful final standoff at the Western Air Temple. His ability is a highly specialized subset of firebending, created by superheating the air around him and channeling explosive bursts of firepower focused through his third eye tattoo. While this power is absolutely lethal with uninterrupted concentration, it proves highly volatile with a few glaring weaknesses.

After nearly ending Aang’s life three times, Combustion Man’s final stand destroys swathes of the abandoned Air Temple. Unwilling to let the Avatar escape a final time, his unending attacks are laser-focused and able to cut through all other bending attempts to slow him down. The spectacle is massive, as is the carnage. However, the weakness of his technique is exposed when Sokka hits his third eye with a boomerang, effectively interrupting the flow of his chi. Combustion Man tries to strike again without concentration, causing a self-centered explosion as the overheated air around him detonates point-blank. This reckless move obliterates his surroundings, plunging him to his death in the depths below the temple. (However, this will not be the final time the Avatar series sees this deadly “combustionbending” style surface with other benders.)

6. Katara vs Hama the Bloodbender in “The Puppetmaster”

As the first style of bending fans are extensively introduced to in the series, waterbending has been associated with quiet power and often nurturing tendencies. It has been shown to have healing properties, but becomes formidable in tidal wave proportions. Skilled Waterbenders can even transmute the liquid into ice for additional offensive capabilities. But the chilling episode “The Puppetmaster” exposes another terrifying fact about the natural world — water is in every living thing. Especially humans. Katara’s standoff with elder Hama puts this to perfect use with the introduction of the dreaded power of bloodbending.

Many benders can impact subsets of their element — skilled Firebenders can create ultra-hot lightning, and Earthbenders can manipulate impure metal. Waterbenders, in turn, can physically control the water inside of a body to puppeteer them like a marionette. Katara learns about this horrific skill from Hama and has it used against her during the strength of a full moon. But Katara is the superior bender, overcoming the bloodbending influence and drawing water out of the living grass and trees around her to fuel her waterbending. However, the outcome of the battle changes Katara when she is forced to use Hama’s own technique against her, giving the old woman exactly what she wanted — a way to pass on the knowledge of bloodbending to defeat the Fire Nation.

5. The Order of the White Lotus Liberates Ba Sing Se in “Sozin’s Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang”

The series finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender is chock full of jaw-dropping battles. There’s no reason why it wouldn’t be. It represents the culmination of character arcs, generations of in-world conflict coming to an all-out clash for freedom. And one of the most hopeful, inspiring, and surprising fight scenes comes when the Order of the White Lotus arrives at the Siege of Ba Sing Se. The best moments in the series often come with benders of many nations working together for one cause, and while the Order lacks an Airbender (due to their total obliteration apart from Aang), this battle shows the strength of the older generations taking a stand to protect the future.

Uncle Iroh is eventually revealed to be the Grand Lotus of the secretive order, joined by King Bumi (Earth), Jeong Jeong (Fire), Pakku (Water), and Master Piandao (the aforementioned sword master) to strike back against the Fire Nation’s siege of the Earth Kingdom capital. Seen as some of the most disciplined and skilled wielders of their respective arts, the White Lotus members are able to ensure a total victory for Ba Sing Se, liberating them from the ongoing occupation. In a world so defined by the rivalries of elders and the divide of nations, watching the Order of the White Lotus take a stand is enough to make fans stand up and cheer.

4. Aang vs Azula vs Zuko in “The Chase”

The lines between enemies and allies constantly shift throughout Avatar‘s multiple seasons. While many join the hunt to capture Aang, things are never more complicated than when Zuko is challenged by his hotshot sister Azula. As firebending royals with something to prove, the siblings end up fighting one another as much as they fight Aang over the course of the series. But as Zuko’s loyalty begins to shift, fans get to see the complex dynamic play out in the abandoned Earth Kingdom village of Tu-Zin.

The battle initially appears to be a standoff between Azula and Aang alone, the Avatar’s own allies left behind while trying to give their Fire Nation foes the slip. But Zuko’s arrival changes things — he takes a battle stance between his sister and the Avatar, intent on fighting both. What follows is a fluid and breathless battle between the two Firebenders and the Airbender, all against one another. There are no alliances here yet, just nonstop action as a brother and sister come to blows and Aang desperately tries to evade capture. Eventually, the rest of Team Avatar arrives, as does Uncle Iroh. From this point forward, the race to capture the Avatar becomes more and more complicated in exciting ways.

3. Katara and Aang vs Zuko and Azula in “The Crossroads of Destiny”

The aptly named finale of Book Two: Earth is still considered one of the greatest battles in all of Avatar: The Last Airbender. It arguably launched the Zutara (Zuko + Katara) ship and drew harsh lines around redefined loyalties. No longer was the adventure a simple fight against the Fire Nation as Aang sought to master the elements. When Katara and Zuko find themselves imprisoned in the Crystal Catacombs of Ba Sing Se, the arrival of Iroh, Aang, and Azula throws everything into chaos.

Iroh pleads with his nephew to choose the path of good, but Azula sees this moment as her chance to capture the Avatar. An all-out battle ensues, with Zuko taking sides with his sister instead of with Katara, with whom it seemed he was making amends. All four elements are engaged in the fight, as Aang puts his earthbending abilities to the test using the cave’s crystal growths. This four-way battle is visually gorgeous, contrasted against the green glow of the subterranean caverns. It’s also significant for character growth and the breaking down of long-held rivalries. But what cements this battle as one of the most iconic is Azula’s deadly lightning strike — Aang’s death in spirit form was a devastating cliffhanger when this fight first debuted, and it continues to define what the series is capable of emotionally and visually.

2. Avatar Aang vs Firelord Ozai in “Sozin’s Comet, Parts 3 and 4”

Of all the battles in the series, the final two on this list should be no surprise. The series finale is an epic battle on all fronts, with all firebending empowered beyond belief by the passing of Sozin’s Comet. Aang and all his allies are spread across the continent, battling city sieges, Fire Nation loyalists, and for some, former allies. Also known as the Battle at Wulong Forest, the ultimate clash between Avatar Aang and Fire Lord (now called Phoenix King) Ozai arguably decides the fate of the world while the siege of the Earth Kingdom rages elsewhere at the same time.

With both benders at full strength thanks to the fiery influence of Sozin’s Comet, this explosive spectacle pushes Aang to his absolute limit. It requires the use of all four elements and initially, the Avatar uses them only in self-defense rather than in violence. This is in accordance with his peaceful Air Nomad background, but eventually he is pushed into confrontation via the Avatar State. Seeing the result of Aang’s many lessons from many masters makes this battle extremely memorable — especially as he protects himself with the seismic sense earthbending he learned from Toph. Additionally, the use of energybending to block Ozai’s chi flow and effectively remove his firebending for good is more satisfying and karmic than any blow of violence Aang could have struck as the most powerful being in the world.

1. Azula vs Zuko and Katara (AKA the Final Agni Kai) in “Sozin’s Comet, Parts 3 and 4”

There are multiple Agni Kai battles that take place over the series, but perhaps the most iconic fight in the series is the final Agni Kai empowered by Sozin’s Comet, fought across two parts of the Avatar: The Last Airbender finale. And while this and the previous entry can easily be interchanged in the top two spots, the striking visuals of this battle, as well as the sibling showdown between ferocious Azula and reformed Zuko, are what make it the overall fan-favorite. The Agni Kai is an ancient Fire Nation tradition, usually fought for a matter of honor, and ends when one combatant physically burns the other.

This Agni Kai is fought to determine which royal will claim the title of Fire Lord, with both benders empowered beyond belief under the passing of the legendary Sozin’s Comet. Azula is already known for her vicious, unstable attitude and impossibly hot blue fire and lightning techniques. But seeing Zuko unleash his strength, fury, and pain at everything he’s suffered under the pressures of his Fire Nation upbringing is a cathartic experience. And he’s not alone — Katara is with him, and she even takes on Azula when well-struck lightning renders Zuko temporarily unable to continue the fight.

The battle is won not by firepower alone, but by Zuko’s ability to keep composed while his sister succumbs to her own raging ambition. And having a master Waterbender on his side didn’t hurt either. With this victory, the Fire Nation officially sees a change in regime which represents growth, healing, and reparation for all the pain caused in the past.
