The Best Duos in Critical Role

By Jasmine Edwards on Sep 21, 2023

Anyone who plays RPGs knows that relationships are one of the most important aspects. While playing your characters, you create and break friendships. You fall in and out of love. Other party members both help and hinder you. Enemies and even strangers on the make-believe streets can impact your entire narrative.

This idea is obviously very prevalent in the critically acclaimed series Critical Role. Whether you look at the podcast, stream, or animated series, you can tell how important it is to form and fortify relationships. So below, we’re looking at the best duos/pairs from all three campaigns: Vox Machina, Mighty Nein, and Bells Hells.

Vex & Vax

Vox Machina

Of course we’re including the twins. They’re the obvious choice. Vox Machina’s Vex’ahlia and Vax’ildan are a power duo for the ages. Inseparable through thick and thin, Vex and Vax are well matched in both their personalities and abilities. They complement each other perfectly, moving, breathing, and existing in sync. And of course they fight — but what siblings don’t? It doesn’t change the fact that their love and loyalty for each other is one major driving force of Campaign 1.

Grog & Pike

Vox Machina

Grog Strongjaw and Pike Trickfoot are best buddies. They rage together, merciless in battle as true warriors and “monstahs.” Around just each other, of course, they’re soft and silly. That’s expected from pseudo-siblings. After all, Grog and Pike were raised together by Pike’s grandfather. Their relationship is filled with unbreakable love and trust. Naturally that trust is tested (especially when Grog picks up a cursed sword) but it’s Pike’s voice and near-death that bring Grog back to himself.

Doty & Taryon

Vox Machina

Doty literally wouldn’t exist without Taryon Darrington. The adventurer and tinkerer crafted the automaton Doty to be his scribe. That way, none of Tary’s fabulous adventures and brave deeds can ever be forgotten. However, Doty isn’t just a tool. He’s also Tary’s best friend, and even though Doty gets destroyed a few times throughout Campaign 1, Tary always makes sure to put him back together again.

Nott & Caleb

Mighty Nein

Nott the Brave and Caleb Widogast from Campaign 2 have a parent and child relationship. But make no mistake — Nott’s small stature does not make her the kid in this dynamic. Functioning as Caleb’s fun, slightly alcoholic, kleptomaniac mom, Nott protects and nurtures him. Meanwhile, Caleb wants to learn new magic so he can become powerful and take care of her as any devoted son would.

Laudna & Imogen

Bells Hells

Spooky witch girlfriends! That says it all, but we’ll still say more about these Campaign 3 characters. Laudna and Imogen Temult instantly hit it off the moment they met. They bonded because they were both spellcasters. After deciding to travel together, they only grew closer, enjoying each other’s personalities and company. And then, after a brief separation, the two women realized their feelings were much stronger and deeper than anything platonic. They recently shared a kiss and will continue to develop their romance as the current campaign progresses.
