Disney isn’t all princesses and pixie dust! Plenty of Disney fans are drawn to the darker sides of Walt’s wonderful world. With a huge group of intelligent, ruthless, and well-designed antagonists, it’s easy to see why.

Disney villains have intense screen presences and part of why they’re so captivating is their dialogue. Whether they’re trying to get the hero on their side or are reveling in their (short-lived) victories, these bad guys and gals know how to make an impact. She’s so bad, the word “evil” is in her name. Obsessed with never letting her face card decline, the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs asks her magic mirror every morning who is the most beautiful person in all the land. This quote is doubly important because the moment the mirror hesitates and names Snow White instead, the hunt begins!

This is by far one of the most iconic Disney villain lines. The Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland has a lot of anger issues. How does she cope with these strong emotions? By executing anybody who makes her mad. That’s certainly one way to curate the vibes and people you want around you…

— Maleficent, Sleeping Beauty (1959)

How can we hate Maleficent when she’s just so fabulous? She’s also just really funny. When her goons disappoint her, she comments on their poor performance with expected drama and flair. And we know her confidence in her own abilities and fealty to the forces of evil is well-earned. So we kind of feel for her when her underlings don’t do a good job. It’s so hard to find good evil lackeys these days.

 — Cruella de Vil, One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)

Cruella de Vil is quite the character. She knows what she wants, and she’s used to getting her way. Yet she’s also absolutely miserable all the time. What’s most fun about that, however, is how content she seems to be existing in this perpetually pessimistic state. A villain who can embrace her own cruelty and unhappiness? We love that for her.

“I’ll admit that in the past I’ve been a nasty.”

— Ursula, The Little Mermaid (1989)

While attempting to convince Ariel to strike a bargain, Ursula plays up her own apparent innocence. She laments her label as a witch or a trickster, but her big grin tells us she’s hardly repentant. The Little Mermaid’s villain really said she doesn’t regret one bit of her evil, self-serving past at all. And you know what? Give ’em shell, girl.

“What do you say you and me take a walk over to the tavern and take a look at my trophies?”

— Gaston, Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Gaston has got to be one of the most despicable Disney villains. Crude and overconfident, he just won’t give Belle a break in Beauty and the Beast — as evidenced above by his egotistical “date” invite. But we can’t deny his ridiculous theme song is a bop. And it’s hilarious how many annoying personality traits his smarmy, smiling mouth can squeeze into a single verse.

— Jafar, Aladdin (1992)

In Aladdin, Jafar is honestly a caricature. He’s brooding, melodramatic, and prone to ostentatious outbursts or mustache-twirling plots in dark palace corridors. Alongside his chatty parrot Iago, Jafar can thus get pretty comedic. This line, however, shows his darker side. Because it’s more understated, it’s a lot scarier than his grand speeches about world domination.

— Oogie Boogie, The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

This stitched-up, bug-filled anthropomorphic sack gives us the heebie-jeebies. What’s most unsettling about Oogie Boogie is how delightfully he sings about murdering our protagonists. No one in The Nightmare Before Christmas is safe according to his song, which is filled with threatening lyrics and sickening green neon lights. Our skin’s crawling just writing about it.

— Scar, The Lion King (1994)

Ah, isn’t Scar’s confidence refreshing? It’s a shame he has to boost his own ego by putting down others, though. But that is, of course, what makes him a villain! The Lion King‘s cunning antagonist constantly shows off his whiskers and wit — all while belittling his hapless hyenas — and we honestly adore him for it.

— Dr. Facilier, The Princess and The Frog (2009)

Dr. Facilier really is just so cool. And also horrifying. He’s got a strong tether to unknown forces, connections to spirits, and a generally hair-rising vibe about him. But he also has a cool hat. So while we should be terrified, we can’t blame any of the characters from The Princess and the Frog who get caught up in his charm.
