The Best Hogwarts Classes and Professors in Harry Potter
Harry Potter makes every kid want to go to school. Not to real school, though; rather, every young muggle from our world dreams of attending the most famous learning institution in the Wizarding World as a Slytherin, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a boarding school for students ages 11 to 17. The castle boasts everything from moving staircases to house ghosts and forbidden corridors. Another appeal of Hogwarts is its extensive course list as well as the renowned professors who teach the next generation of magicians. Below, let’s take a look at some of the best aspects of Hogwarts’ magical curriculum — maybe it will help you decide which classes to take once you receive your very own Hogwarts letter.
Defense Against the Dark Arts
There are rumors that the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor is cursed — don’t let this stop you from attending class, though. This course is essential for students learning to protect themselves from dark magic, evil creatures, and ominous objects. The incredibly high turnover rate of staff means students will get a new, (hopefully) fun learning experience every single year! Unfortunately, no professor will ever be as good as Remus Lupin, a founding member of the Marauders and the Order of the Phoenix as well as a champion for werewolf rights everywhere.
Taught by Professor Minerva McGonagall, Transfiguration is a required course at Hogwarts because it teaches essential magic. Transfiguration is the magic of changing one object to another, and even shifting inanimate objects to animate ones and vice versa, such as a rat into a teacup and back. For more advanced students, transfiguration may be used to create an Animagus form! However, keep in mind that you must register your transformation status with the Ministry of Magic, unlike those troublemaking Marauders Sirius Black/Padfoot and James Potter/Prongs.
Care of Magical Creatures
Do you love animals? How about magical creatures of every shape, size, and degree of danger? Look no further than the elective Care of Magical Creatures course, taught by the beloved half-giant Rubeus Hagrid. Here you can experience the joys of outdoor learning while learning how to coexist with your magical environment. Search for gold with Nifflers, test your patience with Flobberworms, and if you’re not so savvy with a broomstick, take flight with Buckbeak the Hippogriff.
Rumored to be a dueling champion, Professor Filius Flitwick teaches Hogwarts’ Charms class. Here you will learn everything from Wingardium Leviosa, the charm that saved Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and Harry Potter from a troll in their first year, to the Accio summoning charm — used rather famously during the Triwizard Tournament when Harry summoned his broomstick in the dragon challenge. If you want to become an Auror or Healer after your Hogwarts graduation, make sure you study hard and earn at least an ‘Exceeds Expectations’ on your Charms O.W.L. examination!
With Professor Severus Snape, students will learn to appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is potion-making. If you’re ever struggling with your Potions homework, Draco Malfoy is known to be quite good at brewing. Many potions are extremely useful in the Wizarding World — antidotes for poisons, poisons that cure paralysis, and potions that reverse the effects of Veritaserum are just a few of many that can be learned and utilized through this course. Conversely, there are quite a few dangerous potions in any capable wizard’s arsenal. Amortentia, a love potion, is deadly in all hands, and it is even hypothesized that Lord Voldemort cannot feel love since he was conceived by a father under the influence of Amortentia. Let this be a warning to all witches and wizards: Practice potions wisely.
