All the Best Quotes from DC’s Blue Beetle Movie

By Sideshow on Aug 18, 2023

Have you ever wished for tougher skin? Maybe more of a backbone? Well, what if you could get both of those (and more!) from advanced alien technology? Sounds pretty great!

Well, sorta. Jaime Reyes, AKA Blue Beetle, discovers that being a super hero is a lot more difficult than some people (yeah, talkin’ to you Superman) might have the world believe. In fact, being a super hero is downright messy. Luckily, Jaime has the support of his family, plus the mysterious Scarab who bonds with his spine.

Here are some of the best quotes from DC’s Blue Beetle film!

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Blue Beetle

“We’re invisible to people like that, Jaime. It’s like our superpower.” – Milagro

While Jaime Reyes believes he can change the world, his sister Milagro is a little more grounded. She sees the world for what it is: unequal. Neither sibling is wrong. In fact, they continue to balance each other out during the film, providing the support the other needs in their toughest moments.

“Is that the new Tamagotchi?” – Rudy

Jaime’s family has high hopes when he goes to talk to Jenny Kord about a job. However, all he returns home with is a Big Belly Burger box. As Milagro says, it’s kind of a letdown. Jenny was extremely adamant that Jaime not open the burger box, no matter what. But his family has other ideas. They’re all curious about what’s inside, including Jaime. Uncle Rudy even offers his expert technological opinion once it’s opened!

“Host overreacting.” – Khaji Da

For the most part, Jaime’s Scarab is a mystery. The Scarab and Jaime take a while to fully reach complete symbiosis. But there are glimpses of a personality beneath all the black and blue armor. As Jaime is struggling to acclimate to the suit’s superpowered settings, the Scarab gives him a little advice when it comes to flying. Thanks a lot, Khaji Da.

“¡Ánimo! We can do this.” – Alberto

There’s no doubt that Jaime’s apá is the heartbeat of the film. Alberto Reyes provides much-needed positivity for his family, especially when their circumstances take some unexpected turns. Even when things look especially bad, the Reyes family only needs to think of Alberto’s favorite saying, “¡Ánimo!” It’s like a rallying cry, a reminder to take heart, cheer up, y seguir adelante.

“He’s like a Mexican Doc Brown.” – Jaime

During Jaime’s journey, Uncle Rudy lends his expertise in technology, especially when it comes to understanding how the Scarab works. Without Rudy, Jaime would have been lost. However, Rudy is a bit eccentric, much like Doc Brown from Back to the Future. He even names a device after a retro super hero, El Chapulín. Seems like bugs are a recurring theme these days.

“Your house is full of love. Your family — that’s a home.” – Jenny

Jenny Kord is the daughter of Ted Kord, the Blue Beetle who disappeared. Her mom also passed away when she was little, which is why she appreciates Jaime’s beautiful family. Even when Jaime points out how cool it must have been to grow up in a fancy mansion, Jenny replies that a home is something different.

“Maybe it’s time we get our own hero.” – Rudy

For the most part, Uncle Rudy is an expert in technology and a source of comic relief. But there are a few significant moments between Jaime and his tío that show an incredibly important bond. When Jaime is feeling unsure of his purpose, Rudy reminds him that his actions as a super hero go beyond the current situation. Plus, Batman is a fascist.

“Hay muchas cosas que tú no sabes de tu Nena.” – Nena

Rudy is always good for some laughs, but Jaime’s Nena knows how to kick ass and take names. As the family infiltrates the secret Kord Industries lab, Nena breaks out the big guns — literally. When Milagro is surprised at the normally quiet Nena, Rocio says one day Nena will have to share more about her revolutionary past. There’s a lot we don’t know about Nena, but she certainly knows when it’s tiempo para luchar.

“Oh, bummer. But sacrifices have to be made for the greater good.” – Victoria Kord

As the head of Kord Industries, Victoria has constantly needed to prove herself. That’s why she became hardened over the years, insistent that she knows what’s best for the world. If those devious advertisements with herself strategically surrounded by brown and Black kids weren’t enough, this quote proves that Victoria is treacherous.

“Yo siempre estaré contigo, flaco.” – Alberto

At times, the whole super hero thing is pretty overwhelming. But Jaime’s family always brings him back to Earth, especially his apá. Together, Alberto and his son talk about purpose. Everyone seeks to understand their purpose. For a super hero, purpose holds even more weight. Fortunately, Alberto reassures his son that he has a place in the cosmos. In Alberto’s words, there’s an inherent promise that even when everything seems lost, he’ll always be right at his son’s side.

“Use the pain we’re feeling and turn it into power.” – Rocio

Right before Jaime faces Victoria for their final confrontation, his mom stops him. She speaks directly to the Scarab but her words are also for Jaime. Pain is inescapable. It waits for us at every corner in life but if we forge that pain into power, we can do what must be done.

“I remember everything now.” – Carapax

Throughout Blue Beetle, there are subtle hints that Carapax, Victoria Kord’s super soldier, might have a change of heart. When Khaji Da assists Jaime in calling upon his mercy, Carapax finally acknowledges that Victoria is the villain. In his indigenous Guatemalan language, Carapax remembers his own past. Earlier he had told Jaime that his love makes him weak, but Carapax ends up seeing that it’s actually the opposite.

“Ahora, sí podemos llorar.” – Nena

Each member of Jaime’s family offers, in their own way, strength during the film’s climax. But once things quiet back down, the broken pieces still have to be picked up. That’s when Nena tells her family that yes, we can cry now. All of the Reyes family did what they had to do during the fight. Afterward, it’s finally time to take a deep breath, cry together, and plant new nopales.

Now that Blue Beetle is buggin’ out on the big screen, maybe it’s time for a refresher on his comics background. You can check out Jaime Reyes’ backstory here as well as a breakdown of Jaime’s friends and enemies.
