As the third film in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Marvels does it all. As Kamala Khan, the relatively new hero known as Ms. Marvel, gets entangled in official Avengers business, she can’t help but geek out a little bit. Okay, actually, geek out a lot. But who wouldn’t? Kamala is a huge super hero fan, especially of Captain Marvel, and the chance to prove herself with her favorite Avenger is a daydream come true.

We’ve all fantasized about an Avenger asking us to come along on a mission. And look, if this is an actual Avengers test, Kamala is perfectly willing to drop high school. No questions asked.

“If this is all top-secret information, why is it on a clear case?” – Kamala Khan

Enthusiasm aside, Kamala does have a few questions about being an official Avenger. Namely, the logistics — if the database about super-powered individuals is top secret, shouldn’t these devices be a little more discreet? The audience gets to live vicariously through Kamala and her family throughout The Marvels, as the Khans voice everything we’re thinking. Even Monica Rambeau can’t deny that Kamala has a point.

In a surprising cameo, Valkyrie, the king of New Asgard, arrives to give sanctuary to refugee Skrulls. This group of Skrulls just had their colony destroyed by Dar-Benn, who is on a mission to restore the Kree homeworld Hala by stealing resources from other locations. Valkyrie uses the Bifrost to transport Emperor Dro’ge’s small group to safety but before she leaves, she gives Carol a piece of much-needed advice. Every hero could stand to remember Valkyrie’s words.

Nick Fury whisks the Khan family up to the S.A.B.E.R. space station so he can keep an eye on them. As is to be expected, the shock of space travel is a lot to take in. Aamir sums it up best when he calls his wife Tyesha to check in with her. Maybe we can put in a call to the scientists at S.A.B.E.R. to settle it once and for all — how do directions work in outer space?

Nick Fury has always been Carol Danvers’ biggest fan (well, aside from Kamala, of course). Back in the ’90s, when they first met, Fury knew that Carol would prove to be one of Earth’s mightiest heroes. But that title doesn’t come without a price. The Marvels explores Carol’s immense grief about her actions after Captain Marvel.

Once she discovered the corruption of the Kree’s Supreme Intelligence, Carol set out to destroy it. However, her vengeance caused civil war to break out on Hala. The results were absolutely devastating, reducing the Kree homeworld into a barely livable mess. While the Kree refer to her as The Annihilator for her actions, nobody is harder on Carol than herself.

The Marvels’ escapades on Aladna are a technicolor explosion of song and dance. Like, literally, the people of Aladna can only speak through singing. Fortunately, Carol’s space husband Prince Yan is bilingual and they can strategize about Dar-Benn’s impending invasion while dancing for the prince’s adoring fans.

Yes, you read that right. Carol had to marry Yan in a previous diplomatic mission to uphold Aladna’s matriarchy. As they step and twirl across the dance floor, Kamala and Monica look on in disbelief. But Monica knows Kamala is filing it all away for future segments of Sloth Baby Productions.

At its core, The Marvels is a film about family and what it means to uphold those bonds. Like so many who grapple with trauma, Carol believes she must fix herself before being worthy of love. Monica assures her that family doesn’t have to work that way — as long as she is simply there, that can be enough to get through anything.

Dar-Benn’s plan is to steal natural resources so she can fix Hala. The cost of this plan is that it displaces anyone who gets in her way — including Fury and Monica’s S.A.B.E.R. personnel. In a moment of genius (or absolute madness), they figure out that the newborn Flerkens can be used to transport the hundreds of scientists aboard the space station.

Logically, it makes sense. Flerkens are able to access pocket dimensions when they swallow anything with their hidden tentacle mouths. However, that doesn’t make it any less terrifying to be snatched into the maw of a strange alien by slimy, slithering tentacles.

The Khan family provides immeasurable heart to The Marvels. Their love and support for Kamala shines in every scene, whether they’re fending off Kree warriors or helping to herd space kittens. But the most tender moment happens when Kamala has to leave with Carol and Monica for a final fight against Dar-Benn. Kamala’s mother, Muneeba, doesn’t want to see her daughter in danger but she also knows the world needs Kamala — so she gives Ms. Marvel a tearful send-off full of unconditional love.

“I always knew I would have to stay.” – Monica Rambeau

Monica Rambeau is no stranger to selfless decisions. She watched her mother and aunt serve for the greater good, she witnessed Wanda Maximoff give up her family for others’ safety, and now she herself must make the ultimate sacrifice. When Dar-Benn rips a hole in space-time, only a huge amount of energy can fuse the hole back together and repair the universes. Sadly, that means Monica has to finish the job from the other side of the tear.

Even though Carol races to save Monica at the last minute, she can’t reach her in time. But Monica predicted this would happen. She was prepared to make a difficult decision so reality could fix itself. Not to worry though — Monica ends up in very capable, blue-furred hands.

The Marvels Post-Credits Scenes

Bonus Quote: “Did you think you were the only kid super hero in the world?” – Ms. Marvel

There’s no way you can discuss The Marvels without mentioning those two post-credits scenes. Each one has the potential to completely redefine the MCU when it comes to team lineups. First, we see Kamala Khan visiting Kate Bishop. She asks the above question, and also points out that Ant-Man has a daughter. This new partnership could lead to MCU versions of either the Young Avengers or even the Champions.

Next, in a mid-credits scene, Monica wakes up in a hospital-like room. Maria Rambeau is seated at her side, except this isn’t the mother Monica knows. Beast of the X-Men appears and refers to Maria as Binary (a codename used by Captain Marvel in the comics). He mentions that Professor X wishes to speak with them all as the X2 theme plays — a hint that Monica might have landed in the universe where the original X-Men films took place.
