The Best Two-Face Quotes From Across DC Media

By Jasmine Edwards on Mar 11, 2024

Gotham villains tend to have a way with words. Whether they’re ranting at Batman, performing dramatic monologues, or firing off a quirky quip, they’re all notable. But Two-Face’s quotes tend to stand out because of his intelligence and eloquence. After all, Harvey Dent used to argue for a living. He is definitely never going to stop talking through all his thoughts, feelings, and actions.

Below, let’s break down some of the best Two-Face quotes in DC comics, movies, and television.

“Why should I hide who I am?”

The Dark Knight

Harvey Dent has a lot of outstanding lines in The Dark Knight. We can all quote his famous tagline about living long enough to become the villain, or his idealistic monologue about the night before the dawn. We should give some page space to his lesser known words, though. This question is particularly powerful because it ties into how he refused skin grafts and embraced his truer, darker nature underneath the “golden boy” district attorney persona.

“All men are guilty … and innocent. Which makes justice nothing more than a flip of a coin. The outcome, unpredictable. That is, unless the system is corrupted…”

Batman: The Long Halloween

Famously, Tw0-Face waxes poetic about fate and an even playing field. However, he recognizes the inherent corruption and failure of the systems he once held in high regard. So in many cases, he makes his own luck and his own rules with a rigged coin toss. His double-sided quarter is just as infamous as his half-burnt quarter.

“Hero is just a concept. Call someone a hero long enough, and they’ll believe it.”

Detective Comics

This is one of Two-Face’s longer quotes. The entire quotation goes on to discuss how the same could be said of monsters, and so forth. Such a moral exploration of the nature of humanity, power, and influence is Harvey’s standard M.O. Still, it prompts an intriguing discussion. Do you consider yourself a hero or a monster? Did someone tell you what you are, or did you decide? Wrestle with that one for a bit.

“You thought we could be decent men in an indecent time. But you were wrong.”

The Dark Knight

We had to include just one more from The Dark Knight. Because the entire movie is focused on the parallels between Two-Face, The Joker, and Batman, so how could we not? This heartbreaking quote shows just how far Harvey fell from his ideals and beliefs. And so falls Gotham’s white knight.

“This is my world now. A dichotomy of order and chaos, just like me.”

Batman: The Animated Series

One thing about Two-Face is that he’s always psychoanalyzing himself. Unlike many other villains, Two-Face isn’t insane and hasn’t lost touch with his old self. He is just comfortable with two identities coexisting within him and allowing fate to dictate which one gets more time to shine.

“If you can make me just like you, then it follows I can make you just like me.”

Detective Comics

Two-Face sure loves his chiasmus. This rhetorical device repeats concepts and syntax in reverse order for a stronger impact. It makes perfect sense to give it to this villain, whose entire design and mannerisms are illustrated in inverse. Plus, it helps that this statement is true — if Two-Face can potentially be made good, couldn’t he just as easily turn someone bad?

“You could say we’re of two minds on the subject.”

Batman Forever

Batman Forever gives us a campy spin on the Caped Crusader and his Rogues Gallery. This Two-Face wears colorful clothes and exhibits signs of dissociative identity disorder, which isn’t as common in modern interpretations of the character. No matter what, though, his self-aware taunt to a guard he’s about to kill goes down in the Two-Face Quotes Hall of Fame.

“This is no game I play! This is obsession!”

Detective Comics

Since Gotham is full of so many villains, they often clash. Two-Face is extremely critical of Batman’s other enemies. Raving and raging against their methods and silly games, he insists his purpose is greater. Two-Face wants Batman to truly suffer and face his wrongdoings, not just have a bad day or die. We understand. It’s good to stand out from the rest when everyone’s gimmick is a little too similar.
