This article discusses the Daggerheart tabletop game system by Darrington Press and Critical Role and its core rule set now available to order at Sideshow.

Calling all tabletop roleplaying fans! Are you ready to roll up a new adventure? You can now order the Daggerheart Core Set, which includes the full player rulebook and card set, directly through Sideshow.com.

Perfect for running or playing in fantasy campaigns using the official Daggerheart ruleset, this set has everything you need to get started on your next epic quest with friends.

What is Daggerheart?

  • Daggerheart is a new original tabletop roleplaying game developed by Darrington Press.
  • It uses D12 dice rather than the typical D20 for ability checks.
  • Darrington Press is continuing to develop new subclasses and character creation options, with additional supplements for the game coming in the future.

Daggerheart promises gamers “epic and heartfelt tales of adventure” and “maximum fun” at your table. In the tradition of other tabletop roleplaying game (or TTRPG) systems like Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, FATE, and more, Daggerheart allows players to create empowered fantasy heroes with unique ancestries, classes, and abilities. It is designed for highly collaborative storytelling that encourages communication and teamwork to craft a shared story rather than players playing “against” a GM (or game master) simply to “win.”

At the core of Daggerheart is its Duality Dice system using D12s (twelve-sided die) that represent your character’s Hope and Fear. These emotions can be used as a sort of currency to benefit and enhance risky maneuvers, dangerous encounters, and emotionally driven decisions. Hope and Fear can also be used by both the players and GM, creating a dynamic world where choices matter and have consequences for all involved.

Players will find many familiar fantasy roles and ancestries to create your characters. The rulebook also includes campaign frames for worldbuilding inspired by subgenres like romantasy, dark fantasy, post-apocalytic, Westerns, and more.

What comes in the Daggerheart Core Set?

  • The Daggerheart Core Set includes a nearly 300-page illustrated hardcover rulebook and 279 illustrated cards in a magnet-clasp box.
  • The play cards include details for players to utilize and keep track of their character’s abilities, including 18 Ancestry Cards, 2 sets of 9 Community Cards, 54 Subclass Cards, and 189 Domain Cards.
  • Dice are not included.
  • The set retails for $60.

The Daggerheart Core Set includes the comprehensive tabletop rulebook as well as 279 cards that make character creation and ability management easy for players and GMs alike. There is no separate game master’s guide, allowing all individuals at your gaming table to utilize the same rules and resources.

With nearly 300 pages filled with information and illustrations, the hardcover rulebook gives detailed advice on how to make the table a safe environment for players, how to be a respectful and engaged player, worldbuilding resources, and full tutorial examples of play.

The cards provide character building resources, allowing players to pick their subclasses, manage spells and abilities, and have easy reference for how to roll checks or activate combat or narrative effects. There is enough variety to allow for parties to avoid doubling up on character creation and play styles.

Dice are not included in this set, but any standard 7-dice polyhedral set will work. Players may also want to have multiple D12s on hand for their Hope and Fear duality dice rolls.

Is Daggerheart the same as Critical Role?

  • Critical Role encompasses the entertainment brand’s many stories, projects, and publications, including their tabletop campaigns, animated series, games publishing, and more.
  • Daggerheart is a distinct RPG rules system from Critical Role‘s initial basis in Dungeons & Dragons 5e and 2024 rules.
  • However, Daggerheart rules have been and will be utilized for occasional oneshots set both in and out of the continuity of Exandria.
  • Age of Umbra is a miniseries campaign that was played by the cast of Critical Role using the Daggerheart rule set.

Daggerheart was developed by many of the creative minds at Critical Role, through their gaming imprint Darrington Press. They also worked with a dedicated team of Darrington Press game designers who continue to support the game’s growth and expansion. There is active playtesting, community engagement, and even new supplemental releases in development.

Darrington Press publishes games that take place within the world of Exandria (like Uk’otoa and the upcoming A Familiar Find) as well as other original sci-fi, fantasy, and horror titles that range from tabletop gaming systems to multiplayer board and card games.

Critical Role‘s main streaming campaigns — including the Exandria-set Vox Machina, Mighty Nein, Bells Hells, and Campaign 4, set in the new world of Araman — are primarily played with Dungeons & Dragons 5e and 2024 rule sets by Wizards of the Coast.

However, special episodes and oneshots have been played in the Daggerheart system. This includes the “Bells Hells: Oaths and Ash Special” (the first Daggerheart game set in Exandria), their Dispatch oneshot, and the “Daggerheart Critmas Live Show.” Fans can likely expect more live play of this new gaming system in the future.
