John Stewart first appeared in Green Lantern #87

• Publication Date: 1971
• Creators: Dennis O’Neil, Neal Adams, and Dick Giordano

Social upheaval and political turmoil in the late 1960s dared comic book writers to examine their own prejudices. Most of the heroes were white men facing fictional problems — especially the Lanterns, who have often been dubbed “space cops.” The Bronze Age brought sociopolitical commentary to comics pages. Creator Dennis O’Neil pushes the limits of the time period with John Stewart, who openly challenges police offers and American racism in both his demeanor and dialogue.

Alternate Lantern Guy Gardner is injured in Green Lantern #87, prompting the Guardians of Oa to require another suitable alternative. They lead Hal Jordan to John Stewart, who is peacefully playing dominoes with his friends and refusing to endure police harassment. Jordan and Stewart embark on a mission together in the city in order to test Stewart’s worth. By the end, he proves himself a capable Lantern, and is marked to wear the ring should Jordan ever become incapacitated in the line of duty.

The prejudices Black people face in society reverberate throughout John Stewart’s story. Stereotypes about “scary” Black men still persist today. In the ’60s and ’70s, the Civil Rights movement, led by historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and the Black Panther party, protested these racial biases. And while Green Lantern #87 is somewhat dated — and still penned entirely by white men — it does take a more liberal approach to U.S. politics by introducing John Stewart.

John is a Black man — something he cannot and will not cover up with a domino mask. Even if he did, a Black man with his face obscured is automatically deemed less trustworthy. Stewart’s creative team put an admirable amount of effort and thought into Stewart’s rejection of that costume accessory. To this day, Stewart is unshakably visible in all of his actions and appearances.

John is the third human to wield a Green Lantern ring

Alan Scott was the first ever Green Lantern. Then, Hal Jordan took up the mantle — with his alternate, Guy Gardner, in place. But John Stewart technically wielded the Green Lantern Power Ring before Gardner ever did because of Gardner’s untimely injury. He earned his place in the Corps after battling a Manhunter sent by the Guardians of the Universe to judge his worthiness. Faced with a threat to his community, Stewart leapt into action in the way only a decorated Marine could.

His bravery, tactical brilliance, and fortitude both impressed and frightened the Guardians. They vowed never to reveal they orchestrated the test in the first place for fear he would challenge them. Obviously, Stewart’s instinct to protect and serve is just that strong. Since earning his place among Power Ring wielders, he has gone on to become a legendary leader of the Corps itself and inspired generations of new Lanterns — including Far Sector’s Jo Mullein.
