DC Data: Punchline’s Real Name, Powers, and History

What comes after a joke? Punchline first appeared in Batman Vol. 3 #89 (2020). Since then, this villain has been gearing up to assist — and possibly outpace — The Joker in every possible way. She’s a true threat and a tour de force in the city, able to hold her own against many heroes.

But how did Punchline manage to make her mark on a city swarming with villains of every caliber? Let’s learn about this cunning clown groupie below.

Punchline’s real name is Alexis Kaye

Alexis Kaye’s fascination with The Joker emerged early on. Like many Gotham City residents, Alexis encountered The Joker during one of his villainous attempts to maim and kill innocent people. While on a school field trip to a TV studio, Alexis got caught in the middle of The Joker’s hijacking. She relayed messages to citizens via broadcast, acting as The Joker’s unwilling advocate and news anchor, before Batman intervened.

While the experience left many of her peers traumatized, it instead awoke within Alexis a desire to work with the Clown Prince of Crime. She was convinced his crimes served a larger purpose. So, Alexis became The Joker’s greatest fangirl. She decked out her dorm room in his colors, slapped up some Joker posters, and wore Joker-inspired clothing. Her classmates and counselors were overwhelmed with the seemingly sudden shift into outright worship of this evil man.

She doesn’t have powers

Punchline doesn’t have any super powers. However, she is extremely skilled. She created her own version of Joker Venom. Additionally, her athletic ability is above average. Punchline can perform acrobatics, plus wield dual daggers with considerable finesse. Yet Punchline’s most notable “power” is her charisma. Even as Alexis, this expert manipulator demonstrates just enough emotions to prove she has them. She knows when to garner sympathy or when to put on a strong front. Punchline changes her personality to best suit the situation she’s in and get the results she most wants.

But her obsession with The Joker is very powerful

Inspiration is an incredible thing. A single moment with one man changed the trajectory of Alexis Kaye’s life forever. When she became Punchline, she proved herself to The Joker by murdering her college dean. The Joker then hired her. Punchline completed every task assigned to her, laid her life on the line for him, and put his needs before her own. She also became leader of the Royal Flush Gang, a group of fanatically loyal criminals who kill for Punchline and The Joker alike.

Is Punchline The Joker’s new girlfriend?

Punchline and The Joker are not romantically involved. At the time of their first meeting, Alexis was only a senior in high school. While she has confessed her love for The Joker — and his age isn’t always apparent, or standardized — he has not equivocated any attraction. Besides, Punchline’s desire hinges on celebrity worship, which isn’t exactly your typical (or healthy) relationship dynamic.

Punchline is the opposite of Harley Quinn

Make no mistake — Punchline is not the “new” Harley Quinn. Nor is Punchline a copy of the Clown Prince’s most infamous romantic partner. Where Dr. Harleen Quinzel saw redemption and goodness in The Joker, Punchline prefers him as a bad guy. Harley treated and fell in love with The Joker over time. Plus, The Joker and Harley’s relationship is textbook toxic, and it took years for Harley to heal from the abuse. Meanwhile, Punchline’s infatuation centers on The Joker’s worst qualities. And while she was technically his victim, Alexis enjoyed her role in The Joker’s grand drama, and it took very little convincing to get her on his side.

Finally, Harley Quinn and Punchline are constantly at odds. In total opposition to one another, these characters have completely incompatible moral alignments and codes. This is especially true because Harley Quinn is now an honorary member of the Batman Family. Conversely, Punchline is currently lying about her feelings regarding The Joker in order to trick Gotham and burn it to the ground alongside the man she loves. Unlike Harley, Punchline really might succeed.
