Chris Sanders created the character Stitch in 1985. Although that children’s book never came to fruition, Sanders was able to pitch Stitch again for film in 1997. A few years later, Sanders and Disney had a new story to tell centered around found family and belonging. Since then, Stitch has become an icon for outcasts. The tiny blue extraterrestrial is all over Disney’s merch. Plus, guests can occasionally “meet” Stitch in Disneyland California during special events and parades.

He certainly has a massive fanbase! But what’s so special about Stitch? Well, he has a unique and compelling backstory. Stitch was designated Experiment 626

• Experiment 626 referred to Stitch’s number in the lab.
• Stitch didn’t have a proper name until Lilo gave him one.

What’s in a name? The alien we know as Stitch was originally called “Experiment 626” because he was his creator’s 626th experiment. The subjects were named in order, impersonally and without any affection or connection to their personalities or characteristics. They were not pets or pals. They were disposable and made for nefarious purposes. Fittingly, in alien form, Experiment 626 had 6 arms, two antennae, a spiky back like a hyena, big teeth, and blue fur.

He changed his exterior to blend in on Earth. Once he was around humans, they gave him a new name. Lilo called her new “dog” Stitch. Thematically, this was because Stitch would eventually help repair her relationship with her older sister Nani. The naming scene also gave crucial insight into Lilo and Nani. By accepting the uncommon name, Nani embraced her little sister’s weirdness and let her personality shine.

The mad scientist Jumba created Stitch

• Jumba made 628 total genetic experiments.
• 626, or Stitch, was designed to be a monster.

Dr. Jumba Jookiba was an evil genius who was put on trial for his illegal genetic experimentation. Obsessed with his work, he created 628 living experiments. All were subject to his whims and tests. Jumba’s most infamous experiment was, of course, 626. When audiences first met Jumba, he was imprisoned for his crimes and raving to the Galactic Federation panel about his impressive, albeit very risky, lab rats.

When Stitch escaped to planet Earth, Jumba and an agent named Pleakley followed in order to retrieve and neutralize the runaway alien. Jumba and Pleakley bumbled over the human community and almost destroyed Stitch’s newfound home. In the end, however, the Galactic Federation allowed Stitch to remain with the Pelekai family. Otherwise, Stitch would have been alone and lonely, locked in a cell for the rest of his life.

Stitch is destructive and deceptively cute

• He was often mistaken for a weird dog.
• Stitch loved to cause chaos and disrupted the town.

According to Jumba, Stitch’s only instinct was to “destroy everything he touches.” He was essentially programmed that way. When Stitch initially crash landed on the island, he certainly followed his “evil” instincts. He let the wreckage burn, cackling maniacally into the sky as he celebrated his freedom. Then, Stitch ended up in an animal shelter. He scared the other dogs — and even the staff. Lilo was unfazed by Stitch’s blue fur and otherworldly appearance. She thought his big ears and eyes were cute.

Lilo and Stitch got along so well because Lilo also had a mean streak. A bit of a brat who liked to make strange dolls and fight dirty, Lilo was the perfect companion for him. But the little girl also helped Stitch lower his “bad meter.” By teaching him to coexist within her community, Lilo fashioned him into an ideal best friend. Together, Lilo and Stitch learned they didn’t have to look or be “normal” to be loved.

He can change his shape … and surf!?

Stitch’s powers and abilities include:

Evil begets evil. Jumba experimented on the living subjects he created, making them more and more poorly behaved. He wanted them to be impervious to destruction so they could wreak unmitigated havoc in space. After leaving the galaxy, though, Stitch’s powers made him a total nuisance on Earth. In Hawaii, he broke things, messed up the landscape, and frightened passersby. When he wasn’t being rude or inflicting pain, he was simply naughty.

Stitch’s abilities helped him have more fun, though. The whole point of Stitch was that he never had to be what someone else made him. His “instincts” and base functions did not define him. So, Stitch utilized his powers to enjoy life. He learned to surf, play the ukelele, dance, and build sandcastles. He could bark and behave like a dog, rest in a hammock, and sneak into small spaces. Alongside Lilo, Stitch got up to some adorable antics.
