Gamers have been awaiting the release of Grand Theft Auto VI for years. Now finally targeting a 2026 drop date, GTA VI is set to be one of the biggest video games of the year, allowing players to shoot, steal, and steer their way to infamy with Rockstar’s winning gameplay formula in an entirely new setting with new protagonists.

Its predecessors GTA V and GTA Online still have robust communities, but many series long-haulers and newcomers alike can’t wait to block out their calendars and dive in to the game. If you have a hard time reaching your gamer friends in November, this is probably why.

Grand Theft Auto VI‘s Official Release Date

• Development for the game was first confirmed in 2022, and it was formally announced in 2023.
• GTA VI is set to release on November 19, 2026.
• GTA VI originally targeted a May 2025 release date, but has been delayed several times.

Grand Theft Auto VI is officially releasing on November 19, 2026, after years of development, anticipation, and infamous delays (which is to say nothing of the franchise’s most infamous moments in-game). The title will be the eighth installment of the main series of GTA titles, but will be the 16th game in the franchise overall.

Considering that the last “main” release, GTA V, was over a decade ago in 2013, it’s no wonder excitement for this game is at an all-time fever pitch. Ultimately, the delays were so that developer Rockstar Games and parent company Take Two Interactive could ensure players would get a fully functional, polished game experience. As many recent examples have shown, it’s much harder to recover from a supbar launch than it is to ensure things go smoothly in the first place.

Could GTA VI get delayed again?

It is extremely unlikely that the game would get delayed again, despite what beleaguered and pessimistic gamers might think. GTA VI‘s delay has been the subject of many jabs and memes online (“We got [xyz] before GTA VI.”), but fans don’t have much longer to wait. Fan-run countdown sites and social accounts have noted it is now 7 months until the game’s release. Expect summer marketing and more news soon.

GTA VI Plot, Setting, and Protagonists

• GTA VI takes place in a state called Leonida, which is home to Vice City.
• Players will take control of a romantic criminal duo, Lucia and Jason.
• Lucia and Jason must protect each other from a state-wide conspiracy following a failed bank heist.

Ready to return to Vice City? Details for GTA VI reveal that the game is set in the fictional state of Leonida, the Florida-like setting that has been backdrop to famous franchise locale Vice City (based on Miami). This open-world game will also feature additional fictional regions like Grassrivers, the Leonida Keys, among others, as part of its expansive map for players to expand their criminal dealings.

While this isn’t the first time players have had multiple protagonists to play as, Grand Theft Auto VI features the series’ first non-optional female playable protagonist — Lucia Caminos. Along with Jason Duval, the playable protagonists are romantic criminals à la Bonnie and Clyde, protecting one another from a massive conspiracy they uncover after a botched bank robbery.

Jason Duval formerly served in the Army before working for local drug runners in Leonida, while Lucia Caminos served time in the Leonida Penitentiary for previous criminal charges.

Additional characters have been revealed as part of the cast of this vibrant, dangerous world, including a friend of Jason’s named Cal Hampton, a bank robber named Raul Bautista, and Jason’s landlord Brian Heder, among others. Deeper plot details are yet to be revealed, but gamers can expect a deep and dynamic web of conspiracy, criminal dealings, and more once they get their hands on the game.

GTA VI Gameplay Details

• GTA VI is an open-world action adventure game that features driving, shooting and gunplay, the Wanted System, and more.
• Many core mechanics seem to be similar to past GTA releases, although improved for current generation gaming.

So far, Rockstar has only released two cinematic trailers that appear to show predominantly pre-rendered cutscenes from the game (note the old release date still featured in the thumbnail above). Outside of franchise staples like shooting, driving, television broadcasts, and more, fans have yet to be given any concrete specifics about what is new for GTA VI.

Extremely early development leaks in 2022 gave gamers news to speculate on, but that was years ago and Rockstar worked hard to remove all traces of the leaked content from the internet, likely because it doesn’t reflect the final intended quality of the experience. Eager players should expect more specific details and features to be revealed soon as the pre-launch marketing cycle begins for Grand Theft Auto VI.

What platforms will get GTA VI at launch?

Grand Theft Auto VI is currently confirmed to be releasing for PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S consoles when it drops on November 19, 2026. Throughout the franchise’s history, GTA games have released on dozens of platforms, but these latest generation consoles are among the most technologically advanced — especially when considering the PS5 Pro is also on the market. Whether GTA VI will be part of the PS5 Pro enhanced game library is yet to be seen.

Fans are also hoping for a PC port of GTA VI, but currently that is not confirmed. If you want to hit Vice City on launch day, you’ll have to do it on the PlayStation or Xbox.

Does GTA VI have an official price yet?

• GTA VI will have a Standard Edition and an Ultimate Edition, each priced differently.
• The Standard Edition will cost approximately $80 (USD).
• The Ultimate Edition will cost approximately $100 (USD).
• The game’s physical edition will not include a disc, but has a code for a game download in the cover.

The prices on modern video games are a subject of debate among fans who remember the days of $25 Nintendo cartridges. Ultimately, as technology advances and development on these games gets more costly, game prices go up. The head of Take-Two Interactive has previously stated that their goal is to provide a fair exchange between the price charged and the sheer depth of gameplay offered.

It was recently revealed that the game’s Standard Edition will cost about $80 (not including tax) while an Ultimate Edition will be around $100. The Ultimate Edition gives players exclusive access to certain in-game shops that allow customization, as well as exclusive vehicles, car mods, weapons, and more.

Given that modern games can have campaigns and side quests that span into nearly a hundred hours of entertainment for completionists, it’s up for players to decide whether they want to buy in, and what level of experience customization they want to experience. This highly-anticipated title is expected to be one of the highest-selling pieces of media in history when it drops in November.
