Bat-Family Stats: Who’s the Tallest Robin?

When you’re flipping through the pages of a comic book, the personalities and stakes can seem larger than life. And in a city like Gotham, where every super-villain has their gimmick and the alleys are teeming with crime, the stakes are pretty high.

But how much larger than life are these DC characters? Well, to start, the members of the Bat-Family all swoop in at various heights and statures. Batman himself is 6’2″, which is pretty tall unless you’re comparing to someone like The Joker. And of course, wherever Batman goes, a Robin is never far behind. In chronological order, let’s take a look at each major Robin and see how they measure up as Batman’s legendary sidekick.

Dick Grayson
5’10″

Time as Robin: 44 years

For many Bat-fans, Dick Grayson is the first person who comes to mind when Robin is mentioned. He was, after all, Bruce Wayne’s first ward. The original Boy Wonder teamed up with Batman in Detective Comics #38. His family, the Flying Graysons, had just been murdered at the circus. Bruce Wayne decided to take the young trapeze artist under his wing. The rest is Bat-history.

Over the years, various ages have been given for when Dick first entered a life of crimefighting, but no matter the continuity he always starts at a young age. His acrobatic skills lent themselves to the super hero life, allowing him to become a formidable fighter. Dick is known to fly across the battlefield with impressive agility and graceful movement. As he grew older, Dick outgrew the Robin persona, first joining other sidekicks with the Teen Titans and then forming his own super hero identity, Nightwing. Now, Nightwing and the other Teen Titans are leaders in their own right as the Titans.

Jason Todd
6′

Time as Robin: 4 years

Tragedy is never far from a Robin. Jason Todd made his first appearance in Batman #357. Eleven issues later, he would become Robin. However, Jason was a far cry from Dick. While he was always extremely talented and valiant in his own right, the drive to prove himself ended up being too great. In some stories, Batman first met Jason when the young man was stealing the wheels off the Batmobile. Holy grand theft auto, Batman! His troubled family background and childhood on the streets gave Jason a rougher exterior than Batman was used to, leading to many clashes in morality.

Eventually, Jason took it upon himself to confront The Joker and he was murdered by the super-villain. Decades later, Talia al Ghul resurrected Jason in a Lazarus Pit. As is often the case, a hero reborn isn’t quite the same. Jason was devastated that Batman never avenged him. He took on the name Red Hood, connecting him to his murderer’s shady past. For years, Jason operated on his own, employing guns and defying Batman’s no kill rule. These days, Red Hood still follows his own rules but he’s on better terms with his mentor.

Tim Drake
5’6″

Time as Robin: 19+ years

Batman is known as the World’s Greatest Detective, so it’s only fitting that he would eventually have a Robin whose investigative skills matched his own. Timothy Drake debuted in Batman #436, officially becoming Robin 21 issues later. While Dick and Jason inspired sympathy within Batman, Tim earned his position by impressing the super hero. All on his own, Tim deduced the secret identities of not only Batman but he also connected Dick Grayson and Jason Todd to Robin.

In time, Tim would become a founding member of Young Justice and a frequent member of the Teen Titans. His best friend is Conner Kent, the clone of Superman also known as Superboy. Though he lacked Dick’s natural fighting talent and Jason’s ruthless nature, Tim supplemented his intelligence with his trusty bo staff. When Batman was presumed dead, Tim abandoned the Robin persona and allied himself with R’as al Ghul to locate Batman. As Red Robin, Tim forged his own path and continues to be a vital fixture in the Bat-Family, even occasionally operating as Robin if Damian is out of town.

Stephanie Brown
5’5

Time as Robin: 3 months

Though her time as Robin is the shortest, Stephanie Brown (first appearance: Detective Comics #647) is a memorable addition to the Robin lineup. As the daughter of Cluemaster, an ingenious super-villain, Stephanie could have gone down a very different path. However, she used her cunning to go against her father as The Spoiler. During this time, she also dated Tim Drake. When Tim temporarily wasn’t allowed to be Robin by his father, Stephanie filled in as Batman’s sidekick.

Much like Jason, Stephanie had a difficult childhood (it’s not easy being family with a villain) and her tenure as Robin was filled with doubt from everyone around her. Though she was extremely determined, nobody really believed in Stephanie’s ability to fight crime. In fact, Batman even fired her, which led to a disastrous string of events in which Stephanie attempted to prove herself — only to end up mortally wounded in the hospital. After a faked death courtesy of Dr. Leslie Thompkins, Stephanie returned better than ever. She’s received training from her best friend Cassandra Cain, and now these two often work together as Orphan and Spoiler.

Damian Wayne
5’4

Time as Robin: 15 years

Finally, we have Damian Wayne, the fifth Robin and Batman’s son. After a complicated affair with Talia al Ghul, the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul, Batman slowly came to terms with the fact that his son not only connects him to one of his oldest (literally) enemies, but this young man is also skilled in numerous deadly arts. Just like his father, Damian is highly trained. But his League of Assassins background means Bat-Family morality is a constant work in progress for Damian.

Bruce Wayne’s son made his first appearance in Batman: Son of the Demon #1. Three years later, Damian officially became Robin. Since then, his journey as a member of the Bat-Family has been a long re-education, reconciling his lethal abilities with the strict code of his allies. However, Damian proves himself time and time again. Even in the face of evil clones and sinister plots by his mother, Damian rises above. Most recently, he was a leader in the mission to save the world from arcane gods during a cataclysmic event that stopped even the Justice League. With time, Damian could prove to be the best Robin of all.

The Robins don’t stop there! Among the endless alternate timelines and Elseworlds, there are plenty of other Robins who have measured up to Batman’s heroics. In Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns (1986), Carrie Kelley made her debut as Batman’s accomplice. Elsewhere in DC lore, Drake Winston is a Robin of sorts in Batman ’89 (2021) and Gan is the fourth Robin in Batman: Beyond the White Knight (2022). Much much later, Batman Beyond’s little brother Matt McGinnis would become the Robin to Terry’s Batman.
