Hype Girl (Wonder Woman) Artist Interview with Mimi Yoon
As a part of Sideshow Con 2023, we are excited to present our first ever figural collaboration with artist Mimi Yoon — the Hype Girl (Wonder Woman) Designer Collectible Statue, available for pre-order now. Capturing the themes of empowerment and independence from this DC Comics icon, the artist has combined her personal love of streetwear with the Amazon’s signature style.
Mimi Yoon studied graphic design at CSULB and has founded an art academy for youth, mentoring them for 10 years before she started to paint her passion. Mimi is currently based in the Los Angeles area, and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her commissioned work clients include DC Comics/Warner Brothers, Cartoon Network, Coca Cola, McDonalds, Target, IDW, Dynamite Entertainment, Zenescopic, and many more. Mimi’s artwork is collected by private collectors worldwide.
Sideshow recently had the opportunity to sit down with Mimi Yoon and interview her on her artistic origins, her favorite topics to create around, and the direct inspirations and aspirations behind the Hype Girl (Wonder Woman) release. Get hype — you can check out the full interview below!
About Mimi Yoon
Sideshow: What is your background as an artist? What first sparked that love of creating for you?
Mimi Yoon: I can’t recall what initially sparked my interest for creating, but I have been drawing for as long as I could remember. Art is an extension of myself without boundaries, and the inspirations come through everything … the beautiful and the ugly.
S: How would you describe your particular artistic style?
MY: I feel as though my artistic style adapts with what I am trying to portray. Although I studied graphic design in college and only have very basic training in fine art, it comes naturally to me. Most of the time, I paint in a cartoony and illustrative style as a nod to my nostalgia. My pieces that I love the most are the illustrative paintings where I can express a message through emotion, manipulating the edges and making you question reality.
S: Do you have a favorite type of subject to capture in your work? People, themes, colors?
MY: I love painting women as my subject, with symbolism and twists. Whether it is obvious or subtle, I strive to capture the beauty and the raw power that women possess. My audiences are invited to interpret them as they feel.
Meet the Hype Girl (Wonder Woman) Designer Collectible Statue
S: What does Wonder Woman mean to you?
MY: Wonder Woman to me represents strength, justice, and equality through compassion. She is the ultimate symbol of women’s empowerment.
S: What were some of the most important style details to capture when creating an homage to Wonder Woman? What were the important details of your own style to capture in the piece as well?
MY: “There’s a Wonder Woman in all of us” is the message that I wanted my piece to portray. Hype Girl is a young woman living in today’s current culture. She represents the idea that you shouldn’t be afraid to face the world or break the norm while expressing yourself in your own unique style.
S: Have you had your paintings and illustrations translated into three-dimensional form before? Were there any particular challenges adapting your 2D art of Hype Girl into this collectible?
MY: Hype Girl is my first 3D collectible piece translated from my 2D painting. The process was fun and exciting. I felt that there were some challenges in translating my particular and more signature style of the female face, but overall the 3D designers and artists at Sideshow did an amazing job.
S: If you could have one piece of the Hype Girl’s fit for yourself, which would it be?
MY: I love all the individual elements from Hype Girl’s outfit. But I would have to say the basketball sneaker-inspired boots really tied the entire fit together. If these existed, her Wonder boots would be a must in my collection.
S: What is the message you hope collectors get from having this piece in their collections?
MY: When seeing this piece in their collection, I hope that collectors not only feel the idea, “There’s a Wonder Woman in all of us,” but truly resonate with the power and self-expression Hype Girl represents.
