Stark Week Day 1: Iron Man (2008) Fun Facts

From the Marvel Cinematic Universe to his comic book origins, Tony Stark has amassed countless fans over the years. He first debuted as Iron Man in Tales of Suspense #39 (1962). Six years later, he had his own title.

Since those initial appearances, Iron Man has become a founding member of the Avengers, a hero to the entire 616 universe (and beyond), plus a constant fan favorite. Here are some fun facts about the movie that kicked off the MCU, Iron Man (2008)!

Iron Man (2008) Fun Facts

When he was kidnapped by the Ten Rings, Tony was gravely injured. Shards of shrapnel threatened to pierce his heart so he and his newfound ally, Yinsen, constructed a device called the arc reactor. The arc reactor pulled the shrapnel away using electromagnetic force, but the palladium inside the device also slowly poisoned Tony. This set the pace for Tony to constantly tinker away at his suits and tech, each one better than the last.

You can’t have a fully functioning Iron Man suit without the AI voice to go with it! Tony’s second Iron Man armor, the Mark II, was the first suit to integrate the JARVIS AI system.

As a high-flying super hero, Iron Man needs to be able to withstand all types of battle environments — even the upper atmosphere! But those cold temperatures are tough to crack. The Mark III suit introduced the use of gold-titanium alloy (plus the iconic red and gold color scheme), enabling Iron Man to fly as high as he wants without his suit freezing up.
