Stark Week Day 3: Iron Man 3 (2013) Fun Facts

From the Marvel Cinematic Universe to his comic book origins, Tony Stark has amassed countless fans over the years. He first debuted as Iron Man in Tales of Suspense #39 (1962). Six years later, he had his own title.

Since those initial appearances, Iron Man has become a founding member of the Avengers, a hero to the entire 616 universe (and beyond), plus a constant fan favorite. Here are some fun facts about his final solo movie, Iron Man 3!

Iron Man 3 (2013) Fun Facts

The Mark VII suit improves upon the on-the-go ingenuity of Mark V. This eighth suit made use of automatic remote deployment, resulting in an exhilarating midair suit-up scene in The Avengers. Thanks to the Mark VII, Tony survived Loki throwing him off Avengers Tower! Later, despite a self-destruct safety protocol in Iron Man 3, this suit’s helmet also let Pepper Potts know that Tony was still alive.

The Iron Legion was created after the Battle of New York. It was managed by JARVIS, and included a wide range of armor models such as Midas (covered in gold and enhanced with extreme temperature defenses), Sneaky (a suit with cloaking capabilities), Hot Rod (noted for the iconic same color as Tony’s car), and the Silver Centurion (equipped for heavy duty combat with a unibeam). Tony deployed the first Iron Legion against Aldrich Killian, initiating their service with the House Party Protocol and later destroying most of them with the Clean Slate Protocol.

For a perfectionist like Tony Stark, debuting a new suit before it is completely tested and ready is not ideal — but villains rarely wait for ideal circumstances. However, the Mark XLII proved time and again that even Tony’s unfinished work is capable of great heroics. He dubbed this suit “the prodigal son” and it earned a permanent spot in Tony’s Hall of Armor. Its new innovations included automatic assembly using flying pods and it could be summoned using implanted microchips in Tony’s arm.
