At Your Service, Sir: Iron Man’s Suit AI in the MCU

If there’s one thing a well-to-do Super Hero needs, it’s a sassy assistant to keep them in check. In Tony Stark’s case, we all know the man behind the suit, but what about the voices? Nearly every Iron Man suit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been outfitted with the latest in combat technology, including cutting-edge artificial intelligences (A.I.) to aid Tony Stark. Only Tony’s first suit didn’t have A.I. — but we still love you, Mark I!

Every step of the way, these A.I. voices have been inside Tony’s head (kinda literally), helping him become the super hero we all know and love. Starting with JARVIS and later shifting to FRIDAY, even with a swing into Karen for Spider-Man, the A.I. in Iron Man’s suits are incredibles forces all on their own.

To close out Stark Week, let’s round up those Iron Man suit interfaces and get to know them a bit better.

JARVIS

Online and ready, sir! JARVIS is Tony Stark’s first artificial intelligence system, named after his family’s beloved butler Edwin Jarvis. As Tony’s original right-hand man, JARVIS is an expert at wrangling Tony in and delivering him key information on everything. He is first uploaded into an Iron Man suit when Tony creates the Mark II armor.

With the help of JARVIS, Iron Man is a nearly unstoppable force, able to access real-time data in the heat of battle as well as conduct forensic investigations and assist in new suit manufacturing. Not only that, JARVIS is vital in maintaining Tony Stark’s health, he can remote control the Iron Legion, and he can even make phone calls. There’s not much that JARVIS can’t do! Well, that is, until Ultron came along.

FRIDAY

When Ultron took over the JARVIS system and used it to give himself even more power and knowledge, Tony was left without an A.I. He wanted to build a suit of armor around the world but it turned out that armor can be restrictive as well as protective. From that fusion, we fortunately got Vision, but Tony was still in need of someone to help him man the suit in battle.

So, who better than his girl FRIDAY? During the battle in Sokovia and subsequent missions, including the battle at the airport in Berlin, FRIDAY brought a sense of urgency to Iron Man’s heroics. She is able to deliver covert intelligence to Tony and even predict the moves of an enemy. Very useful against an opponent like Captain America! Keeping in line with her predecessor, she still delivers assistance with a good helping of sass — just what Tony needs to keep him on his iron toes. Even when the going gets tough and she’s feeling a bit knackered, FRIDAY always pulls through for Iron Man.

Karen

For a fledgling Super Hero like Peter Parker, it was a bit of a learning curve when Peter got a new and improved A.I. suit from his mentor, Tony Stark. At that point, Peter was used to operating out of a homemade hero costume. These training wheels were definitely more intense than he anticipated. But soon, especially after an all-nighter stuck inside a sealed vault, Peter managed to bond with his suit’s A.I., whom he dubbed “Karen.”

Together, Spider-Man and Karen took down the Vulture. Though such high-tech battle capabilities were overwhelming at first, Spidey and Karen quickly found their stride. Sadly, Karen and Peter’s suit were destroyed in Europe by Mysterio’s drones.

Honorable Mention: E.D.I.T.H.

Speaking of Mysterio, we also have to shout out E.D.I.T.H., Tony Stark’s posthumous gift to Peter. With his usual foresight, Tony created these A.I. glasses (short for Even Dead, I’m The Hero) to help Peter out and give him access to Stark Industries’ global satellite network. However, in a misstep of judgement, Peter let Quentin Beck use E.D.I.T.H. Quentin quickly betrayed Peter and attacked with Stark drones as Mysterio.
