Is Supergirl Stronger Than Superman in DC Comics?

Superman has long been perceived as the strongest super hero in DC Comics. As a Kryptonian, the light from a yellow star grants Kal-El (Clark Kent) unimaginable powers. There’s seemingly no limit to his strength.

Years after his arrival, his teenage cousin also crash landed on Earth. Kara Zor-El is a Kryptonian with a completely different story. That said, she has almost exactly the same powers. At last, it’s time to bring this age-old debate to a close.

Who is more powerful: Superman or Supergirl? And, importantly, how can we know for sure? To celebrate Kara Zor-El’s birthday and her recent DCU debut with Krypto, let’s settle the matter once and for all.

Supergirl Doesn’t Hold Back

As a baby, Kal-El was sent to Earth. He was raised as Clark Kent in Smallville, Kansas, by Jonathan and Martha Kent. They taught Clark the values of love and acceptance. Clark’s parents taught him how to use his powers for good. Still, as a child, Clark didn’t know his own strength. He’s spent his whole life learning to limit his own abilities so that he could live among humans.

Alternatively, Kara Zor-El was raised on Krypton. She was taught to fight and harness her strength even before she gained Kryptonian powers from the yellow sun. Kara was specifically trained so that she could protect Kal-El. It took Superman years to absorb sufficient strength from the yellow sun. On the other hand, Supergirl gained her powers almost the moment she landed on Earth. It’s clear she absorbs her solar powers even faster than Superman.

Beyond that, Supergirl just doesn’t hold back. Honestly, Superman is not as strong even when he doesn’t hold back. In DC Comics’ 2021 series Crime Syndicate, we see Earth-3 Kal-El become the evil Ultraman. Though Ultraman seems to be unstoppable, Kara Zor-El defeats him with ease.

Superman Has More Experience

True, Kara’s strength isn’t as limited as Kal-El’s. However, we must admit that Superman has been fighting for longer. He’s simply got more experience! Superman may not be as agile or skilled as Supergirl. Still, he had access to his Kryptonian powers for literal decades. He learned to use his freeze breath, his super speed, and his X-ray vision with extreme precision. Throughout the years, he has performed countless feats of strength and performed endless impossible acts.

With that in mind, Superman’s experience and precision give him a formidable advantage. He knows exactly how much energy it takes to use his abilities. In that regard, Supergirl would certainly exhaust herself sooner than Superman. She pushes herself to her limits constantly. While it makes her stronger, it makes her fighting less versatile. Kara’s anger and brash behavior can sometimes cost her a fight. Superman, however, almost never loses his cool.

Power Girl Survived the Crisis on Infinite Earths

We’ve already considered the power difference between Earth-3 Kal-El and Earth-3 Kara Zor-El. It is important to look at alternate versions of these characters across the DC Omniverse. That way, we can get a better understanding of their true potential. There’s no better example than Power Girl. Kara Zor-L, AKA Power Girl, is from Earth-2. Her powers are effectively the same as our other Kryptonians. However, she’s done one extraordinary thing that neither Superman nor Supergirl ever have: Power Girl survived the collapse of an entire universe.

In 1985, DC had a massive comic book event. The story was called Crisis on Infinite Earths. In the story, countless parallel universes collapsed into one. The multiverse became singular. Devastatingly, it was only Earth-1 that survived. Everyone from every other universe died or disappeared. That is, everyone except Power Girl. Yes, there are countless gods and multi-dimensional beings who appear to be more powerful than Kara Zor-L. And yet, it was only Kara who survived. That alone speaks to her true strength.

Superman Gets More Sun

We looked at alternate versions of Supergirl. Now it’s time to acknowledge alternate versions of Superman. We have seen his strength in the Injustice series when he takes over the entire world. Fans have also seen Clark gain more and more powers through the years. In fact, there are even specific comics where Clark’s exposure to the sun grants him too many powers. In All-Star Superman, the solar radiation grants him intelligence and strength like never before.

Perhaps the best example is Superman Prime. He’s often referred to as Superman One Million. Yes, he has many names. However, he has even more powers. Superman Prime can do literally anything. How? Well, in this alternate timeline, Superman spent 15,000 years hibernating in the sun. Over time, he gained more and more solar radiation. In that time, his limits surpassed infinity. He can manipulate matter, time, and the universe itself. It is nothing to him. He is undoubtedly the most powerful version of any Kryptonian.

Conclusion: Supergirl vs. Superman

Admittedly, Superman Prime is not the main version of Superman. Still, he gives us a glimpse as to how powerful any Kryptonian can be. Furthermore, we know that Supergirl can absorb solar radiation faster than Superman. It stands to reason that Supergirl One Million (if she ever existed) would be even more powerful than Superman One Million.

In summary, Supergirl has significantly more potential than Superman, but whichever Kryptonian has more yellow star radiation will have access to even greater powers. Ultimately, neither hero is limited by their build, their age, or even their training. It comes down to their ability to absorb golden rays of light from the sun.
