Jubilee is a beloved X-Men character. Appearing in both Marvel comics and movies, Jubilee is instantly recognizable due to her colorful costume choices. She wears a pink shirt and yellow coat, and can usually be seen popping bright pink bubblegum. But besides her covetable aesthetic, how much do you know about Jubilee? Jubilee’s full name is Jubilation Lee

Jubilee’s parents immigrated from Hong Kong, China. In the United States, the couple built a prosperous life for themselves. They named their daughter Jubilation in honor of the freedom and optimism they felt in their new home. A bit of a wild child, Jubilation Lee went by the nickname ‘”Jubilee.”

She discovered her knack for shoplifting early on, splitting her time between a prestigious Beverly Hills school, gymnastics practice, and juvenile detention. But tragedy struck and the Lees were killed by criminals, leaving their daughter penniless and unhoused. A certified “mall rat,” Jubilee befriended skaters and made enemies of security guards. She used her codename Jubilee to earn money through her personal light show; more on that below!

She debuted in Uncanny X-Men #244

Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri created Jubilee. Her first appearance is in Uncanny X-Men #244 (1989). Introduced as a teen busking at Los Angeles malls for money, Jubilee attracted the attention of mutant hunters. On a shopping spree in LA, Storm, Rogue, Psylocke, and Dazzler ended up battling the M-Squad. They also inadvertently brought Jubilee onto their team when she followed them through a portal to Australia.

“Ladies Night” was set almost entirely in Hollywood, Jubilee’s birthplace. When Jubilee traveled to the Outback, she eventually helped rescue Wolverine from cyborgs called Reavers. Wolverine and Jubilee have since developed a beautiful friendship. Some might even call it an almost father-daughter relationship. Their dynamic is so special to Marvel fans that the new Jubilee Premium Format™ Figure by Sideshow even hints at their comic book camaraderie.

Wolverine trained Jubilee to become an outstanding member of the X-Men. She went on to become an original member of the Generation X team. Later, she adopted a baby named Shogo, training him as well as a new generation of mutants at the Xavier Institute for Mutant Education and Outreach in New York City. Jubilee, an underdog herself, always has a soft spot for mutants on the fringe of society.

Her mutant powers are fireworks

Unlike many young mutants, Jubilee was well-aware of what her powers could do. She was not scared of them. Instead, she used her “fireworks” to dazzle patrons at the mall and earn a couple dollars for herself. Her abilities allowed her to generate energy bursts and plasmoids. Jubilee initially manipulated these blasts to resemble streamers and sparklers. Because this manipulation is achieved mentally, Jubilee is naturally more resistant to telepathic mind-reading.

But her powers vary in intensity. At her command, Jubilee can create harmless globules or ramp up to a detonation capable of atom-bomb levels of destruction. Fearing this is the upper limit of her powers, Jubilee does not often explore this molecular-level explosion unless absolutely necessary. Additionally, Jubilee’s own body is not protected from her powers; she wears large sunglasses to protect her sensitive skin and vision.

Finally, Jubilee can also absorb her energy bursts back into herself. And in her brief stint as the hero Wondra, she wore mechanical gauntlets, which granted her super strength. However, Jubilee’s innate mutant powers are still only her fireworks. Any other abilities are drawn from costume modifications, technology … or vampirism.

Jubilee has also been a vampire

The vampire Xarus turned Jubilee into a vampire after she lost her powers on M-Day. Vampirism did not turn her into a villain. Instead, she worked with a secret sect of heroic vamps called the Forgiven. As a creature of the night, Jubilee possessed enhanced speed and strength, as well as invulnerability or resistance to injury and death. She had exceptional hearing, but could be killed by beheading, wooden stakes, or sunlight.

While Jubilee initially struggled with her dark nature, she accepted it — only to be thrown into the sun by Quentin Quire. Somehow, this apparent death became a rebirth of sorts. Jubilee’s powers were restored and to an unprecedented level, at that! Rife with Omega-level potential, Jubilee is ready to shine as the hero she always was. Or maybe to explode onto the scene, just as unruly and amazing as her very first appearance in the 1980s.
