Pride Month may be over, but that doesn’t mean we’re done celebrating! Let’s keep pride going and champion the LGBTQIA+ community all year round with a breakdown of upcoming queer media to look back on — and forward to — in 2023.

Good Omens

Good Omens season 2 premieres today, July 28! This Prime original series inspired by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchet’s book is bursting with queer romances. From the lesbian couple down the street to the angel and demon dancing circles around each other, it’s all tickety-boo when it comes to representation. Tune in to find comedy, comfort, and the courage to be who you are even in the face of literal higher powers.

Nimona

Nimona recently hit Netflix, so you might not have seen it yet. But you should put it on your list right now. This animated fantasy film — based on a graphic novel by ND Stevenson — follows a shapeshifter named Nimona and a commoner-turned-knight called Ballister. Both are being prosecuted unfairly. We’ll stop there to avoid spoilers. Nimona, however, is a fantastic watch for its trans themes and found family narrative.

Heartstopper

Cue all the cuteness. Based on a webcomic by Alice Oseman, Netflix’s Heartstopper returns for its second season on August 3. Praised for its wholesome and heartwarming storytelling, the series explores the highs and lows of coming out and first love. Plus, not just the main couple is queer — we’ve got plenty of supporting characters with rich identities. Even better, Heartstopper actually gives proper time to all those stories.

Titans

For queer super hero fans, sometimes it can feel like the options are harder to find than The Joker’s last shred of sanity. But with Titans, the live-action TV show from DC Comics, we finally get the slow burn romance we’ve all been waiting for. Once Tim Drake is introduced in season 3 to Nightwing’s team, the young hero embarks on his gradual journey toward becoming the next Robin. Alongside Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy, Superboy, and other allies, Tim Drake discovers what it takes to join the Titans. Fans of the comics were also overjoyed when Bernard came onto the scene. In the books, Tim and Bernard are together and on screen, their romance brought a ton of heart to a nerve-wracking final season with Brother Blood.

Red, White, & Royal Blue

Based on the novel by Casey McQuiston, this upcoming LGBT rom-com is full of international drama and long-distance relationships, with a dash of political intrigue. Of course, that’s to be expected when the U.S. president’s son and the British prince fall in love against all the odds. If you’re a fan of the enemies-to-lovers trope, definitely check out Red, White, & Royal Blue, which will be released on Prime on August 11.

Bottoms

Fans of Booksmart (2019) should definitely have Bottoms on their radar. Raunchy and downright hilarious, Bottoms imagines what might happen if two teen girls started a fight club in the hopes of getting laid. Right now, unfortunately, Bottoms is playing in limited theaters worldwide. But we’ll keep our fingers crossed for a wide release on streaming services ASAP.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek has always been a pioneer when it comes to diversity. Strange New Worlds is no different. With an out and proud cast, the series also features prominent queer characters such as Nurse Chapel and Lieutenant Ortegas. The latest live-action Star Trek series carries over the queer representation that warmed (and broke) hearts with Stamets and Dr. Culber in Star Trek: Discovery. No matter which quadrant you’re in, the future is always ready to embrace difference.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is a coming-of-age story young adult film based on a novel of the same name by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. Poignant and poetic, it transports us back to 1987 Texas. Ari and Dante discover themselves — and each other — in ways that rock the very foundation of everything they knew. Released last year at independent film festivals, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe will be available for wider audiences later in 2023.
