In the pages of Marvel Comics, these two haven’t interacted more than a handful of times. Yet their horrible reputations precede them, and that gruesome encounter during the 2015 Secret Wars was instantly legendary.

Over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos slowly emerged as the MCU’s first big bad. Now, Doctor Doom will step out from the shadows in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. With their imposing on-screen presences, Marvel fans want to know: Is Doctor Doom stronger than Thanos? They might not get a big screen showdown, but a comic book comparison will shed some cosmic light on these two Marvel super-villains.

Similarities & Differences Between Doctor Doom and Thanos

• Similarities: Traumatic childhoods, masters of science and magic, constantly killed and defeated, death-related mentors
• Differences: Places of origin (Earth vs Titan), preferred methods of domination (sorcery vs cosmic items)

As far as beginnings go, Victor Von Doom and Thanos both had difficult childhoods. Though Thanos’ birth was the first miraculous natural conception of an Eternal, he also carried the Deviant gene. This meant he was born with tough purple skin and an appearance unlike his fellow Titans. On the other hand, Victor Von Doom was not born with his signature scars. Instead, his Romani parents, a witch and a doctor, each met untimely deaths. Victor’s mother perished in a failed deal with Mephisto and his father succumbed to wounds as he and Victor fled from Latverian nobility.

Through very different means, Victor and Thanos would learn the ways of both science and magic. Victor tapped into his mother’s heritage, learning the ways of sorcery as he also excelled in science at Empire State University. Meanwhile, Thanos was ostracized on Titan for his peculiarities and in his solitude he met Mistress Death. From her, he learned the forbidden Black Arts. Later, in his countless conquests, Thanos would amass alien technology and devoted followers. Thus two separate but equally evil empires rose up.

Allies & Enemies of Doctor Doom and Thanos

Without hesitation, Doom and Thanos are among the most powerful Marvel villains. Surprisingly, they also share diabolical connections to death. As a youth, Victor Von Doom was trained by the Marquis of Death. In a desolate cave on Titan, Thanos was tutored by Lady Death herself. Mentorships like these can only breed utter villainy.

Over the years, Doctor Doom and Thanos have cultivated dedicated followings. While Doom prefers the company of his Doombots, Thanos keeps a few trusted advisors close. At times, they have even teamed up with super heroes to defeat universal and multiversal threats. There is a tenuous understanding between Doom and Namor, as both are imperious rulers of powerful kingdoms. Likewise, Thanos cavorts with Eternal beings whose powers are older than the universe. However, Doom inevitably betrays all his allies and Thanos never strays far from his only true love, Death.

If their list of allies is short, then their list of enemies is filled with an entire universe’s roster. Each super-villain clashes with the Avengers time and time again, though Doctor Doom is most closely associated with the Fantastic Four. Up in space, Thanos’ destined arch-nemesis is Adam Warlock. Since Thanos is the appointed Champion of Death, Adam Warlock serves as his opposite by being the Champion of Life.

At the end of the day, both villains are eternally humbled by their hubris. Doom’s superiority complex means his plans always have a tiny hole in them. And Thanos’ undying love for Mistress Death leads him to be blind to all other pursuits.

Notable Feats of Doctor Doom and Thanos

• Cosmic Collectors: Both Doctor Doom and Thanos have used Cosmic Cubes and defeated Galactus.
• The Name Game: Doctor Doom’s most coveted title is Sorcerer Supreme, while Thanos has sought to be Prime Eternal.

When considering all the major accomplishments of these two Marvel villains, there is considerable overlap. Both have collected Cosmic Cubes, defeated the World Devourer Galactus, and even come back from certain death. For Doctor Doom, his college days were filled with demonic rites rather than merely midterms. His first facial scars actually happened when he tried to bring his mother back from Hell. Later, alongside Doctor Strange, Doom succeeded in freeing his mother’s soul from Mephisto.

During the first Secret Wars, Doom outwitted fellow villains like Kang the Conqueror and Galactus to wield the Beyonder’s immense power. Since then, his thirst for dominion only increased. Even against the mighty Silver Surfer, Doom managed to steal the Power Cosmic. Then, in Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars, Doom usurped power from not only the Beyonders but also Molecule Man. That resulted in the creation of Battleworld.

At the start of his villainous career, Thanos sought revenge against his planet. Nearly all of the Titans had cast him aside for being different and they had to pay. Unfortunately, Thanos’ main targets, his father and brother, were offworld when Thanos struck with nuclear weaponry. Instead, his mother died in the planetary attack.

Perhaps Thanos’ most famous storyline is from Infinity Gauntlet. In this all-encompassing universal arc, Thanos seeks to impress Death by gathering the six Infinity Gems. With these, he would control every major facet of existence. Just like in the MCU, Thanos snapped his fingers and willed away half of the universe’s life. Still, with all that power, Thanos is forever caught in Death’s grasp. Once, as punishment, she even decreed that Thanos would never truly die.

Doctor Doom Kills Thanos in Secret Wars (2015)

Coincidentally, both Doctor Doom and Thanos love to deliver a fatal punch to the chest. And with their vast powers, you know that hurt’s gonna last longer than Eternity. In fact, in Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 Secret Wars, Victor infamously takes on Thanos in one fell punch. Less than a eye blink later, Doom is holding Thanos’ decimated spinal column in a chilling panel drawn by  Esad Ribić.

While this panel is undeniably memorable, it is important to note that this Doctor Doom is imbued with more power than normal. At this point, he is God Emperor Doom, the supreme ruler of an amalgamated universe after the Incursions. Yet all that power was made possible through Doom’s versatility and ability to manipulate. He’s always one step ahead of his enemies, even the great Thanos.

Ultimately, Thanos probably wields and controls more raw power than Doctor Doom, However, Thanos’ weakness for Death means that Doctor Doom, a master manipulator, could outwit the Mad Titan. Power, after all, can be measured on different scales.
