Miles Morales Is Spider-Man in the Ultimates Universe

Originally, Miles Morales comes from the Ultimates Universe, AKA Earth-1610. This universe, at first glance, might seem similar to the Earth-616 universe but looks can be so deceiving. Though many heroes there shared names and appearances of familiar 616 figures, their stories and histories were altered to create a world far different from our own. While the prehistory of Earth-1610 isn’t too far off from 616, events begin to diverge in the 20th century.

In the Ultimates Universe, the Chitauri attempted to conquer Earth and they even aided the Nazis during World War II. Meanwhile, a female Vision crash landed on Earth and Nicky Fury was the first Super Soldier. Later, with further experimentation of Weapon X technology, a mutated genome spread across the world and gave birth to mutants. In response to Magneto’s attacks on humanity, S.H.I.E.L.D. created a U.S.-based super hero team, the Ultimates.

Miles Morales Becomes Spider-Man

After Miles’ uncle breaks into Oscorp, Miles goes to visit Uncle Anthony against his parents’ wishes. A Genetically Altered Spider had snuck into Anthony’s bag and then bites Miles. Once Miles discovers his fledgling powers, similar to Spider-Man, he rejects the idea of being a super hero. It’s just too much. But when Peter Parker is killed by Green Goblin, Miles can’t help but think he could have done something more. He decides to use his powers for the greater good.

Over time, Miles’ unique Spider-abilities prove to be an asset, especially his shocking Venom Blast. Slowly, Miles accepts the responsibility of becoming his world’s new Spider-Man. He joins the Ultimates as well as the Young Ultimates. During a fight with Venom, Miles’ mom Rio was mortally injured. Her death caused Miles to temporarily give up the mask. Just like Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, Miles’ Spider-Man is also plagued by tragedy. At times, that tragedy becomes so unbearable that they even give up the title of Spider-Man altogether.

Miles Morales’ Role in Secret Wars

Especially after the death of his mother, Miles has a strained relationship with his father, Jefferson. Even after meeting the Peter Parker of another universe, Miles spends a year avoiding the hero life. But all that comes crashing down when realities begin to collide.

The World Devourer Galactus arrives in Miles’ reality, a terrifying entity from the 616 universe who begins attacking New Jersey. Once again, Miles is pulled back into the life of a super hero, and he joins the struggle to understand what’s happening. The Ultimates, led by Iron Man, use a portal left behind by Mysterio to visit the 616 and ask their version of Reed Richards for help. Together, they all begin to see that realities are on a collision course, a terrifying phenomenon known as an incursion.

Miles Morales Is Also the Spider-Man of Earth-616

Though the rest of his reality is consumed in the incursion, Miles manages to accidentally board a vessel meant to survive the end of the world. Some time later, he’s discovered by a new version of Doctor Strange on Battleworld, an amalgamated universe ruled by Doctor Doom. Battleworld contains fragments of all the previously destroyed universes. Miles and Peter Parker 616, found among another group of survivors, are tasked to investigate Doom’s power source.

As it turns out, Molecule Man is powering the despot’s twisted reality. Molecule Man is a superhuman capable of shifting reality itself with his manipulation of molecules. When Miles shares a burger he had in his pocket (gross) with the reality warper, Molecule Man feels indebted. Eventually Doom is overthrown and Battleworld gives way to one singular universe, the restored 616. Thanks to his connection with Molecule Man, Miles is granted a place in this new universe along with his friends and family. And with that, two Spider-Men swing around the 616 alongside their other Spider-related allies like Spider-Woman, Silk, and Spider-Gwen. Both Miles Morales and Peter Parker are the Spider-Man of the 616 and their universe is all the better for it.
