Some characters make very little impression on us when we see them for the first time. We forget them once they’re no longer useful or relevant. Yet others capture our attention immediately, enthralling us for the remainder of their story. Every fan has a different type of character they gravitate most toward. But personal preferences aside, some characters simply pull us in because their introductions are written and executed so well.

In a franchise such as Star Wars™, which balances quite a few characters, those memorable first impressions are essential. After all, we can’t follow along with the story if we can’t recall who someone is or why they’re important. Among all the Star Wars characters, however, these eight really fascinated us from the outset:

Han Solo – Cantina Conflict

“Sorry about the mess.” With those words, Han Solo cemented his legacy as one of the coolest Star Wars characters ever. After calmly arguing with a bounty hunter sent to collect him, Han smoothly shot first, ending the conversation on his terms. When he left the booth, he apologized to the bartender for leaving Greedo’s body there. But what else would you expect for an establishment known to host the most wretched hive of scum and villainy?

The Mandalorian – Silent Storm

Many first scenes feature a ton of action and dialogue. Adopting more of a Western archetype, The Mandalorian™ pilot introduced Mando walking silently through a storm and straight into a bar brawl. Clad head-to-toe in armor, Din Djarin exuded total confidence and a clear warning sign not to mess with him. When things escalated, the mercenary dealt with his harassers directly before returning to his target and telling him, “I can bring you in warm. Or I can bring you in cold.” Chills!

Darth Vader – Imperial Invasion

Like we said, many introductions include heavy action. Darth Vader’s, while pretty tame by today’s standards, was rife with violence. By any means necessary, the villain wanted to reach the Death Star plans. He stepped onto the screen with that iconic mechanical breathing, silent precision, and total apathy for the lives he and his stormtroopers took. His intense suffocation scene also became a staple for the Skywalker Saga to shorthand Sith/dark side wielders.

Luke Skywalker – Converter Kerfuffle

When Luke Skywalker was first introduced, he came across as a whiny teenager. And, well, he was. We can all do an impression of his “Tosche Station” line. Unhappy with his farm life on Tatooine, he yearned for adventure and was disappointed with the droids offered to his family by Jawas. Little did he know that a chance meeting would alter the trajectory of his life forever — and catalyze some of the best character growth in pop culture.

Leia Organa – Rambunctious Rebel

Princess Leia Organa’s introduction told us everything we needed to know about her. Stealthy and sassy, she hid vital plans from the Empire inside the astromech R2-D2. Then, Leia talked back to Darth Vader and insulted Grand Moff Tarkin, two of the most fearsome men in the galaxy. Yet Leia chose to display confidence and poise in the face of extreme danger.

Cassian Andor – Street Subterfuge

Throughout the Star Wars universe, heroes are shown to be virtuous and altruistic — flat, in a way, stuck in the black and white of good and evil. Cassian Andor, while heroic, was a far more dynamic character. Forced to forsake some of his own morals for the Rebellion, Cassian chose to betray his informant for the greater good. Cassian was complex and compelling, a true standout in the franchise.

Kylo Ren – Merciless Murderer

Although he’s a divisive character within the fandom, nobody can deny that Kylo Ren’s first scene was epic. He was introduced as the sequel trilogy’s main villain (before we learned the nuance of his situation). His mask and cold demeanor instantly separated him from the warm and expressive Resistance fighters. Additionally, Kylo Ren showcased raw, awe-inspiring command of the Force when he froze Poe Dameron’s blaster beam midair.

Padmé Amidala – Peaceful Protest

As both an experienced diplomat and crowned queen of Naboo, it was Padmé Amidala’s sworn duty to protect her subjects. She also would not condone any course of action that would lead to war. Choosing instead to be taken hostage (or to have her handmaiden/decoy taken), Padmé displayed true courage as well as a level head. Later, while her captors were distracted, she helped break back into her palace and claim her rightful place once more.
