Who Are the Most Mysterious Star Wars Duos?
Many stories revolve around lies, secrets, and betrayal. But some characters are more enigmatic than others. Their secrets drive the plot forward and they earn the suspicious of our trusted heroes others. Additionally, some characters are more mysterious — and powerful — together than alone. Because then we have to ask questions such as: Why are these characters working together? What do they gain? And if those inquiries are difficult to answer, there’s the rub!
Star Wars™ is, of course, no stranger to mysterious duos, pairs, partners, and the like. Below, let’s break down the most curious and cryptic of them.
Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati
Baylan Skoll™ and Shin Hati™ were Master and Apprentice. Their relationship in and of itself wasn’t all that mysterious. However, their motivations remained unclear and ambiguous for most of the Ahsoka™ series. Sure, they were villains. But they weren’t really on Grand Admiral Thrawn’s™ side, either. Who did they work for, then? Additionally, we couldn’t tell what exactly they were. Sith™? Inquisitors™? Just really mean, dark-side wielding Jedi™? While we sort of figured it all out in the end, it was certainly a multi-episode ride riddled with so many unknowns.
Rey and Kylo Ren
The whole “dyad in the Force” concept is still shrouded in mystery. Basically, it was an unbreakable bond formed within the Force, almost like fate or destiny, that linked two Force-wielders together. In the sequel series’ case, it was Rey™ and Kylo Ren™, also known as Ben Solo™. Before they were revealed as a Force dyad™, however, the two of them were inextricably drawn to one another. Rey kept giving Kylo a chance to repent. Kylo couldn’t give up on Rey turning to the dark side. At least they finally managed to get together in The Rise of Skywalker™ … kind of.
Darth Maul and Savage Opress
When he was first introduced in The Phantom Menace™, Darth Maul™ was truly one of the most mysterious Star Wars characters of all time. Luckily, The Clone Wars™ animated series expanded on this Dathomirian’s™ past, present, and future. The most interesting addition to Maul’s lore was the introduction of his brother, Savage Oppress™. The two Night Brothers™ lived only for themselves and each other. Their goals outside of that were somewhat murky. After all, they were part of a whole plot with magic, Sith infighting, and the Shadow Collective™. But it sure was fun to watch them try to achieve ultimate power together.
Sabine Wren and Ezra Bridger
Alright, this is an unexpected choice, but hear us out. Sabine Wren™ and Ezra Bridger™ were fast friends and eventually became like family to each other. They worked remarkably well together on the Ghost™ and beyond. None of that is mysterious. However, Ezra sensed something in Sabine before anyone else did. He disappeared from the galaxy with a message that he was counting on her. Later, we understood this meant to find him — as well as to give herself a chance to awaken her Jedi powers. How did Ezra know? Could this be another dyad situation? We suppose we’ll have to wait for more Ahsoka to find out.
Count Dooku and Qui-Gon Jinn
We just know so little about Count Dooku™ and Qui-Gon Jinn™! These two clearly had history, but so much of it was behind the scenes when they were introduced in the prequel series. Fans knew they were Master and Apprentice, and that Dooku had eventually succumbed to Sith influence. That explained a little bit of Qui-Gon’s more … gray … moral alignment, but that was about it. Plus, we never got to see them interact onscreen! Thankfully, Tales of the Jedi™ gave us an entire episode centered on their relationship as student and teacher. While it still only scratched the surface, it was a great glimpse into two fan-favorite characters’ pasts.
Jango Fett and Boba Fett
Being mysterious is in a bounty hunter’s nature. It’s also basically in the job description. Of course, Star Wars loved to tease us with a more complex and dynamic background for Jango Fett™ and Boba Fett™. Jango requested an unaltered clone trooper™ child for his own as his only compensation for donating his DNA. Then, he raised his son in secret. For as special as this filial bond was, though, we barely got to witness it onscreen. Later — or earlier, depending on how you look at the film vs. chronological timeline — Boba Fett became just as elusive and enigmatic as his dad. What a pair!
