The Most Rebellious Moments in Star Wars Movies & TV

As a franchise, Star Wars™ is built on the concept of rebellion. Every story, whether it’s the original trilogy or the subsequent animated series and beyond, focuses on characters who struggle and succeed against evil. Our heroes defy the odds, waging war against oppression and tyranny throughout the galaxy. But with so many moments in galactic history, can we narrow it down to the best of the best?

Ahead of Andor™ season 2, we’re looking back at the most rebellious moments in Star Wars movies and television. Read on below to see if your favorite moments made our list.

Ahsoka Tano defied the Jedi Order

Long before she took on the role of Fulcrum, which was the name of a spy and information smuggler for the Rebel Alliance, Ahsoka Tano rebelled against the Jedi Order. As a Padawan, she was falsely accused of murdering another Jedi. The Jedi’s rigidity and single-mindedness prevented Ahsoka from getting a fair trial.

Although she was absolved in the end, she couldn’t live with the Council’s rules and regulations any longer. So she left, showcasing individuality, bravery, and an awesome willingness to go against the grain. Ahsoka also went on to use her skills and “snippy” personality elsewhere with much more likeminded individuals such as Sabine Wren and Hera Syndulla.

Brasso led an uprising on Farrix

The Farrix riot is my personal favorite. Andor season 1 simmered with tension from the pilot. Many characters felt subdued either emotionally or physically. Cassian Andor was a conman ruled by impulse and emotion, never quite sticking up for a cause. His home planet Farrix was a very quiet place full of people who wanted something different, but didn’t know how to improve their lives.

Well, one funeral changed everything. Inspired by the last words of a dead woman, Brasso violently revolted against the Imperial presence at Rix Road. Now that’s how you battle a bad government.

Ezra Bridger survived on his own

Ezra Bridger was the main character of Rebels™. Therefore, he had a lot of incredible moments to commemorate throughout the series. However, we’d like to give a special shout out to his survival skills. Both Ezra’s parents died when he was young. At age seven, he began taking care of himself and conning people in Capital City.

Ezra had a real knack for getting both in and out of trouble. Most importantly, however, he flourished as a young rebel and rulebreaker. By simply surviving, he denied the Empire their attempts to subdue his fiery nature.

Jyn Erso smuggled the Death Star plans…

Jyn Erso’s road to rebellion was a long one. While her parents initially defied the Empire, they were both ruined by their non-compliance. Jyn’s rebellious nature dwelled within her insomuch that she was often in prison, but she was politically apathetic for most of her youth.

Eventually, however, Jyn Erso rose to everyone’s expectations. She upheld her family legacy by being on ground zero at Scarif Base. Jyn, alongside her teammates Cassian Andor, K-2SO, Bodhi Rook, Chirrut Îmwe, and Baze Malbus, sacrificed their lives to smuggle the Death Star plans to the Rebel Alliance.

…while Luke Skywalker destroyed the Death Star

Luke Skywalker always knew he had a higher purpose. Stuck on Tatooine, the young man didn’t know of his heritage or relationship to one of the galaxy’s greatest heroes (and villains). Furthermore, Luke did know that he had innate skill for piloting and shooting, as well as a connection to the universe that he couldn’t quite understand.

When Obi-Wan Kenobi came to train Luke, Luke’s life accelerated into the stars. He used the Force and his own talent to shoot down the Death Star, an insidious space station designed to destroy entire worlds. Way to save the day, kid!

Darth Vader eventually betrayed the Emperor

Long ago, Anakin Skywalker turned to the dark side. He was driven to it out of fear, anger, and insecurity. His quest for power to save the people he loved twisted itself into an ugly need for dominion over life and death. Years later, he attempted to take his own son down that path.

But we could see the seeds of doubt in Darth Vader as he suggested to Luke that they overthrow the Empire and rule on their own. That flawed idea morphed into an inspiring self-sacrifice when Vader fought against Emperor Palpatine in order to save Luke Skywalker’s life. And in the end, Anakin Skywalker was restored once more as an agent of the light side.

Similarly, Rey defied Palpatine

During the sequel trilogy, Rey spoke out against bullies as well as shady bosses. Naturally, then, she fit right into the Resistance. Then, The Rise of Skywalker™ revealed that Rey was in fact related to the galaxy’s ultimate evil. Yet Rey refused to totally accept those dark parts of herself. She trained as a Jedi, though she drew on powers from the light and the dark.

In this way, Rey defied generations of black and white moral codes and stubborn thinking. She also killed Darth Sidious in the end to fully solidify her connection to her found family — the Skywalkers — instead of him. Sticking to your heart and not accepting what other people define you as? That’s rebellion at its finest.

Remember — rebellions are built on hope. We have hope that the world can be better, and in turn, we do better. These characters and stories prove that change is possible when you’re willing to fight for it.
