New documentary offers a glimpse inside Heath Ledger’s Joker diary for The Dark Knight

A detailed journal kept by late actor Heath Ledger while preparing for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight has been revealed in a poignant new documentary titled Heath Ledger: Too Young To Die.

In a scene from the trailer, Heath’s father Kim Ledger flips through the diary filled with interesting notes and influential clippings while talking about how immersed his son became in each role that he took.

“He pretty well locked himself up in a hotel, in his apartment, for a month or so, to sort of galvanize the upcoming character in his own mind,” Kim Ledger says. “That was typical of Heath on any movie. He would certainly immerse himself in the upcoming character. I think this was just a whole new level.”

Images of playing cards, clippings from Batman comics, stills from A Clockwork Orange, and the iconic quote “Why so serious?” can be seen in the diary, which all came together in the end to fuel his iconic Joker performance. The documentary, directed by Dag Freyer and produced by Broadview TV, is currently available to rent and purchase from Vimeo On Demand.
