DC’s First Official Joker: Folie à Deux Trailer Is Here!

Cue the music and send in the clowns … the Joker sequel’s first official teaser trailer has taken the stage. DC’s Joker: Folie à Deux will star Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga as Dr. Harleen Quinzel. The film waltzes into theaters on October 4, 2024.

In the field of psychology, folie à deux is defined as “an identical or similar mental disorder affecting two or more individuals.” Translated from French, it’s essentially “madness for two.” And if there was ever a toxic couple in the world of comic books, it’s The Joker and Harley Quinn. Laugh it up but these two together are serious trouble.

What the world needs now, is Joker — Joker 2, to be exact. Arthur Fleck is imprisoned in Arkham after his misadventures in Joker. And it seems the social movement he inspired is still flourishing. Multiple scenes show Arthur surrounded by Joker impersonators. Whether they wear his face or not, it’s undeniable that Arthur’s persona has a profound effect on those who cross him.

Which brings us to his new life within Arkham … and a certain friend who will reignite that signature laugh.

Art has long been used as a therapeutic tool for those who are troubled. Music is especially powerful in healing broken minds and spirits. It seems that, one way or another, music will make its way into Arthur’s time in Arkham. He catches a glimpse of Harley as she sings with a choir group. Slowly, the rain clouds part and a spotlight shines. The Joker’s show must go on.

The teaser shows explosive performances, courthouse demonstrations with “Free Joker” signs, and plenty of musical delusions. Changes are certainly afoot for Gotham’s infamous clown. Possibly even a breakout from Arkham.

It appears that Arthur and Harley’s whirlwind romance will mirror the disastrous route their other incarnations have taken. The teaser trailer shows them dancing across a rooftop (in the moonlight), strutting down steps together, and shimmying across the stage of a smoky lounge. They even have a wedding chapel routine!

Whether any of this is real, or if it’s all in Arthur’s head, remains to be seen. Is Harley a patient at Arkham as well? Perhaps a deranged fan? In the comics, she’s his doctor turned lover. Yet the teaser raises more questions about their working relationship than it answers. And does she know the horrors she’s tapping into? Her eerie last lines at the trailer’s end hint that she’s got some punchlines up her sleeve too — “I wanna see the real you.”
