The 10 Best Duels in Star Wars Film & TV
Anakin Skywalker vs Obi-Wan Kenobi
- Film: Revenge of the Sith™
- Year: 2005
- Context: The Chosen One brings imbalance to the Force.
When two people as close as Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi fight each other to the death, nobody truly has the high ground. Instead, it’s a battle hurtling toward heartbreak. As the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance, this former Padawan and Master clash in a bitter showdown. Years of resentment and manipulation reach a boiling point that is almost unbearable to watch. Only a life-altering injury can bring an end to this heated exchange of blows.
Ahsoka Tano vs Darth Vader
- Series: Rebels™
- Year: 2016
- Context: A Padawan must face off against her former Master.
It’s a common theme in Star Wars — former friends facing each other when one has fallen to the dark side. This fight formula ensures that the stakes are high and the emotions are fraught with everything from heartbreak to anger. Fans of the films often questioned how Ahsoka Tano would fit into the canon mythology outside of TV and this tense confrontation helps bridge the gap. Though they have both abandoned the Jedi in their own ways, Ahsoka refuses to abandon Anakin like everyone else. Few people in the galaxy can make Lord Vader stop in his tracks but Ahsoka proudly stands among them.
Darth Maul vs Obi-Wan Kenobi & Qui-Gon Jinn
- Film: The Phantom Menace™
- Year: 1999
- Context: An enigmatic Sith Apprentice distracts a Jedi Master and his Padawan.
Back during The Phantom Menace, the Sith were only just showing their hateful faces again. Darth Sidious’ enthralling apprentice, Darth Maul, proves to be more than a match for both Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Maul manages to deal a killing blow but he also establishes a lifelong rivalry — one that fuels his fury for the rest of his days. For a split second, it even seems as if Darth Maul might win with his iconic red dual Lightsabers.
The Mandalorian vs Paz Vizsla
- Series: The Book of Boba Fett™
- Year: 2022
- Context: Two Mandalorian warriors fight for ownership of the Darksaber.
In Mandalorian culture, the Darksaber is a symbol of power. It represents their strict creed and upholding a warrior’s honor. Throughout The Mandalorian’s saga, it is a highly sought-after artifact. During this episode, Din Djarin clashes with the immense, intimidating Paz Vizsla for ownership of the blade. Even without direct connections to the Force, this close-quartered match is full of suspense.
Yoda vs Darth Sidious
- Film: Revenge of the Sith
- Year: 2005
- Context: A Sith enemy reveals himself to a Jedi Master.
Old and helpless, they are not. At first glance you would never think these two wizened Force-users could leap and slash like they do. There’s nothing held back in this long-awaited showdown between two powerful Masters of their craft. Yoda unleashes his fury in jaw-dropping acrobatics while Sidious’ cackling belies treacherous skill. The outcome of the battle only adds to the melancholic air of Revenge of the Sith.
Bo-Katan Kryze vs Axe Woves
- Series: The Mandalorian™
- Year: 2023
- Context: Bo-Katan Kryze seeks to reclaim leadership of the remaining Mandalorian mercenaries.
Yet again, ownership of the Darksaber causes two Mandalorians to fight each other. Axe Woves has lost confidence in Bo-Katan Kryze’s ability to lead their people. But Bo-Katan sees a different way forward for the Mandalorians, one that can ensure longevity and a new place in the world. Through cunning, skill, and an important ally, Bo-Katan manages to gain the upper hand and prove why she is the best choice for the job.
Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Vader
- Series: Obi-Wan Kenobi™
- Year: 2022
- Context: An old friend tries to appeal to a Sith Lord who has lost his way.
Though their brief fight in A New Hope is perhaps more well-known, this preceding duel between Ben Kenobi and Darth Vader is equally important. It’s their first time seeing each other after Mustafar. Years of anguish boil to the surface as Ben tries to appeal to Vader’s dormant humanity. Covered in darkness, lit only by their Lightsabers, the shadows of their past close in ever faster.
Rey & Kylo Ren vs Praetorian Guard
- Film: The Last Jedi™
- Year: 2017
- Context: Kylo Ren unexpectedly teams up with Rey.
From this blood-red battle, we first see the impressive might of a Force dyad in action. While Kylo Ren still hasn’t re-embraced Ben Solo, Rey is beginning to push through his defenses. Together, they bring down Snoke and take out the crimson Praetorian Guard, one piercing stab at a time. Using their unique connection, they even share a single Lightsaber during critical moments. Up until this point, the Force had never been utilized in such precarious harmony.
Ahsoka Tano vs Maul
- Series: The Clone Wars™
- Year: 2020
- Context: Maul attempts to take over Mandalore and bring Ahsoka to his side.
Fresh off the heels of a planetary takeover, Maul tries to persuade Ahsoka to join him. Both individuals have been betrayed by the Force in their own ways. Their Masters, for different yet equally affecting reasons, abandoned them. High above a Mandalorian spaceport, these two skilled Force-users are locked in a battle of wills. Fortunately, hatred always proves to be imbalanced in the end.
Luke vs Darth Vader
- Film: The Empire Strikes Back™
- Year: 1980
- Context: A son learns who his father is and loses a hand.
While the final battle between father, son, and Emperor in Return of the Jedi™ is definitely memorable, it’s this encounter between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader that sets the tone for their relationship. Here, Vader taunts the young Jedi yet also holds back in a surprising show of mercy — after all, this is also when he reveals to Luke that they are father and son. From Luke’s unforgettable yell to the smoky silhouettes, you gotta hand it to this duo, they know how to put on a show.
