POLL: Who Are the Best Star Wars Outsiders?

Across the Star Wars™ galaxy, there are numerous renowned groups and institutions. Many of our favorite characters are actually members of these groups — the Jedi Order™, the Sith™, the Mandalorians™, etc.

Each of these groups offers something different for its members. Some promise power, others knowledge, and each provides a sense of community. Still, the characters who really tend to stick with us are also those people who strike out on their own. They’re outsiders. They go against the grain. Here are the top outsiders of Star Wars lore.

Ahsoka Tano

As Huyang™ pointed out, Ahsoka Tano™ belongs to a unique legacy of Jedi™. In fact, her Master, Anakin Skywalker™, is an outsider in his own way — though ultimately he sought acceptance from all the wrong places (and Emperors).

Back to Ahsoka, she’s one of the notable Jedi who left the Order of her own free will, independent of the dark side. In fact, her lightsabers™ and clothing often reflect her choice to walk a gray path rather than the binary dictated by the Jedi and the Sith. Ahsoka is willing to listen to herself through all the noise of the outside world and make the decision she feels is best — no matter what anyone else says. Her ability to trust in the Force is nearly unmatched.

Sabine Wren

Naturally, this list would follow up Ahsoka with her unlikely Padawan™, Sabine Wren™. There are multiple characteristics that set Sabine apart from her peers and her people.

First, Sabine is a Mandalorian, and from a noble clan at that. As a cadet, she defected from the Imperial Academy and joined Hera Syndulla’s™ rebel group, where she met Ezra Bridger™. It’s also widely known that Mandalorians do not typically become Jedi. However, Sabine is determined to find her own path as a Jedi — even if Huyang says she is the worst student he’s ever seen.

Din Djarin

Din Djarin™, AKA The Mandalorian™, is another Star Wars figure who has defied expectation. As a bounty hunter, you wouldn’t think he would turn out to be an empathetic, caring individual, not to mention an adoptive father. Yet somehow he and Grogu™ forged an unbreakable bond.

Like his father, Grogu is also an anomaly. He’s a powerful little being who wields the Force yet walks the Way of the Mandalore™. With the help of a similar outsider, Bo-Katan Kryze™, both Din and Grogu have taken the traditions of the strict Children of the Watch™ and molded them to fit their own needs.

Luke and Leia Skywalker

It was only a matter of time until we returned to the Skywalkers. Each of Anakin’s children can be considered an outsider for various reasons. First and foremost, both siblings defied their family legacy and never turned to the dark side. That’s a big plus for the whole galaxy considering the immense power they wield.

On an individual basis, Leia Organa™ redefined what it means to be a princess. Damsel in distress who? This sharp-witted diplomat isn’t afraid to shoot a blaster or two. Plus, she survived an ejection into space using the Force alone — an ability that had never been witnessed before! Luke Skywalker™ is a bit more conventional though he is certainly willing to bend the rules of the Jedi when it comes to emotional attachment and choosing disastrous Padawans.

Rey

Speaking of legacies, we come to Rey™. Though she eventually fashions herself into a Skywalker, genetically Rey is a member of the Palpatine™ line. Now that’s a lightning-scarred skeleton in the closet. However, Rey discovers the will to stand against her own shadows, which isn’t an easy feat when you’re the spawn of the Emperor™ himself.

Actually, Rey is very similar to Ben Solo™, AKA Kylo Ren™. Ben is the son of Leia and Han Solo™. Each of these young Force-wielders struggled with finding who they were, and both were tempted by the dark side. Together, they even revived an ancient Sith custom known as a Force dyad™, repurposing it to be a force of good.

Darth Maul

What, you thought only protagonists can be outsiders? Not the case! Just as few Jedi leave the Order, few Sith escape the Rule of Two™ and live to tell the tale. One such example is Maul.

When he was introduced as Darth Maul™, this Dathomirian Zabrak™ fellow was Darth Sidious’™ silent assassin. However, he was left for dead when Obi-Wan Kenobi™ sliced him in half. Abandoned by his former Master, Maul swore vengeance against everyone. He rose to power as a crime lord and built his own empire called the Crimson Dawn™. Maul proved that even the dark side contains unforeseen nuance.

Omega

The entire galaxy remembers the Clone Wars™ as one of the most challenging periods in history. Nearly every star system in the galaxy was affected by these wars. But few had such a unique perspective as the Bad Batch™.

Originally, the clone troopers™ were constructed as a secret weapon of the Emperor against the Jedi. However, one batch of clones, Clone Force 99™, was born with abnormalities — that is, genetic mutations. Led by Hunter™, the squad included Echo™, Tech™, Wrecker™, Crosshair™, and Omega™. Of the entire squad, Omega is perhaps the most unique since she is (seemingly) the only female clone of Jango Fett™. Sometimes the apple does fall far from the clone tree.

Finn

Of course, you can’t talk about abnormal troopers without mentioning Finn™, AKA FN-2187™. Stormtroopers™ are notorious for their ability to obey orders without question (and for their less-than-stellar aim). When he witnesses a horrific massacre by the hands of Kylo Ren, Finn decides enough is enough. He deserts the trooper life.

A decision like this was unheard of, especially during the uncertain times of the First Order™. However, the cracks in the First Order did not take long to appear. Finn belonged to a generation of stormtroopers who were recruited as children. Once he grew up and could make his own judgement calls, he decided to step onto the right side of galactic history alongside his friend Rey and his close companion, Poe Dameron™.
