The world of Pokémon is full of excitement, teamwork, and plenty of adventure. Plus, the Pokémon Hotel is now open for relaxation with season 2 of Pokémon Concierge! But, before any Pokémon Trainer begins their journey across land, sea, and air, there are a few steps to complete. We’d like to make sure you are fully prepared to get out there and catch ’em all!

First and foremost, you need to consider the type of Pokémon you’re looking for — do you seek the calm flow of Water Types? Are you drawn to the magic of Fairy Types or the warmth of Fire Types? Maybe, instead, the darkness calls to you and you’re a Dark Type Trainer. There’s no wrong answer here but before you start tossing Poké Balls around it’s good to know about your Type.

What Are the Pokémon Types?

You can think of a Pokémon Type as a way to understand a Pokémon’s strengths and weaknesses as well as their temperaments and personalities. Of course, every Pokémon is their own individual at the end of the day, just like any other animal out there. No two Pikachus are exactly alike!

As far as Types go, however, there are currently a total of 18 Pokémon Types. Some Types refer to an elemental set of powers, while other Types are more supernatural or physiological. A Pokémon’s Type also determines how they should be used in battle. Water is of course (super!) effective against Fire, but not as effective against Electric.

Many Pokémon are also hybrids of multiple Types! For example, Gyarados is a Water/Flying Type and Lucario is a Fighting/Steel Type. You know what they say … two Types are better than one!

What about the ??? Type?

It’s been known for bursts of new Pokémon to appear on the scene, and when this happens it’s entirely possible that some of them will remain unclassified for quite some time. After all, it takes a lot of work to catalog and understand Pokémon! In the case of an unknown Pokémon, they have sometimes been classified as ??? Type.

The most famous example of the ??? Type would probably be Sylveon. Prior to being understood as a Fairy Type, this Eevee evolution was referred to as a ??? Type. However, the ??? Type category has not been in use since the Generation IV games.

Here’s a list of all 18 possible Pokémon Types:

Water, Fire, Electric, Grass, Normal, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ground, Psychic, Ice, Bug, Rock, Dragon, Dark, Fairy, Steel, and Ghost! It’s a big world out there which means there is a Type (or a combo Type) for just about everybody!
