QUIZ: Which Trope Would You Be in a Horror Movie?

Over time, the horror genre has cultivated its own garden of incredibly recognizable tropes — that is, expected character archetypes, figures of speech, patterns, and other storytelling devices that reappear frequently through various media. To many people, tropes now have a somewhat negative connotation, being seen as predictable and routine. But ideas like the final girl, the first to die, and the unkillable killer endure because of their popularity and their ability to be reinvented from time to time.
Remember, while many people see “meta” commentary on the genre as overdone now, Scream was a truly groundbreaking film for having its characters be aware of horror movies and their tropes.
Of course, everyone likes to believe they’d be the hero or the sole survivor in a slasher flick. You’ve seen every sequel, you know all the rules. But it’s not always so simple … or is it?
Take our quiz below and find out where you are on the kill sheet — I mean, call sheet — for the horror film called life.

You’re the Final Girl!
You’re a survivor, you’re not gonna give up. Unfortunately for you, that may mean being put through the wringer just to see the light of another day. You’re resilient, resourceful, and determined, which counts for a lot in a horror film. Even if you’re not the most popular or powerful person around, the moment someone underestimates you will be their downfall. But, hey, it never hurts to take some extra self-defense lessons in the meantime.
You’re the Jock!
In a battle of brains vs. brawn, you pick brawn. Because brains are what the killer keeps splattering all over the floor! You’re the strong, protective type who wants to keep their friends safe by putting yourself between them and harm. You also do well in group situations and know how to be a team player. Sometimes you might not think before you act, but you’ve got a really good heart – don’t let anyone rip it out of your chest, okay?
You’re the Prom Queen!
Heavy is the head that wears the crown – just be careful not to let the killer lop that off for you! As the Prom Queen, you represent the top of the social ladder, whether your horror film takes place in a small town or a bustling cityscape. You are used to the spotlight, taking the lead and making your voice heard over others. Unfortunately, that also goes for your screams when the killer inevitably makes you a high-visibility target.
You’re the Nerd!
Someone has to have the group brain cell around here and it’s you! Like a flashlight in a dark, creepy mansion, you’re here to illuminate the path forward with your knowledge. Some might call it paranoia or over-preparedness, but you know that your mind is the best possible weapon to outwit any killer. You know all the lore, the superstition, and the history of this haunted town. Don’t keep it all bottled up, or else that beautiful brain of yours might end up in a specimen jar.
You’re the Detective!
Face it, chief, you’re the one everyone turns to in a crisis. Dependable and cool under pressure, you have a keen eye for noticing when things are suspicious. You work well alone but aren’t afraid to help others – as long as they listen to you and don’t go making a mess of things in the meantime. You may find yourself a little skeptical while everyone else is panicking, but you know when to trust your gut (hopefully before there’s a knife in it).
You’re the Killer!
Okay, we get it – you love to bring the drama. Whether you’re holding a lifelong grudge or just looking to cause a little chaos, you’ve decided the best way to make it through the horror film is to cut through everyone else in your path. You always seem to be one step ahead of the rest, but don’t celebrate too hard – a final girl is always ready to stop you in your tracks. But even if you get knocked down, that’s what the sequel is for, right?
