The Sassiest Droids in Star Wars

It’s not easy being a droid in Star Wars™. Droids work extremely hard as pilots, medical staff, or general helpers for very little reward or respect in return. They also aren’t allowed to enter certain establishments, even if it’s to accompany their owners. Additionally, lots of people, especially clones, still fear droids due to lingering memories of the Clone Wars. After all, Separatists utilized droid armies which cut down thousands of troopers. This fear makes sense, but it isn’t fair.

Because, of course, droids aren’t a monolith. They have unique personalities, quirks, and even form friendships with each other and other lifeforms. Some droids will just sit back and endure the hatred and abuse, unfortunately. But others will fight back. Here are some of the sassiest droids in Star Wars — AKA the rambunctious robots who won’t stand for any sort of disrespect or disregard.

K-2SO

The “K” in K-2S0 probably stands for King of sass. A former Imperial security droid, K-2SO’s original directive was to capture and/or exterminate members of the Rebellion. A chance encounter with Captain Cassian Andor changes all that. Cassian captures and reprograms K-2SO. Now the droid (somewhat reluctantly) helps the Rebels and co-pilots Cassian’s ship. The reluctance, of course, comes from K2’s insistence that his plans are better and the Rebels’ chances of success are very, very low.

Cynical and sarcastic, the droid disobeys direct orders if he feels they are futile or inefficient. K-2SO explains at length how terrible the plan is and what the odds of failure are, just like a parent swooping in with unsolicited advice. Still, as anyone who’s watched Rogue One™ knows, the droid’s loyalty to his friends knows no bounds. In the end, he willfully sacrifices himself so that Cassian and Jyn Erso can complete their mission.

Chopper

You can’t get much sassier than Chopper (C1-10P) from Rebels™ and Ahsoka™. The Ghost’s resident astromech is like an unruly house cat or your most chaotic and cranky BFF. Chopper has little patience for fellow crew members besides Hera Syndulla. He’ll just do his own thing without their approval if it suits him … which, it usually does. Chopper also derives a very sick sense of glee from playing practical jokes on those who annoy him. That said, Chopper will always have his adopted family’s backs. However, he will complain about them the entire way.

AP-5

AP-5 is a former Imperial protocol and inventory droid. He basically joins the Rebellion out of boredom because he wants to stop counting boxes. However, he quickly finds a new thorn in his side: Chopper, who finds every reason to argue with AP-5. Yet AP-5 is constantly paired with Chopper on missions, causing greatly comedic conflicts. Not to be outdone by the cantankerous Chopper, AP-5 has an insult and sarcastic response for every situation. This droid really won’t hesitate to point out each tiny flaw in your carefully crafted plan.

SM-33

Even droids can be pirates! SM-33 is programmed to be ever-loyal to his ship’s captain — whoever that may be according to intergalactic pirate code. When the children of Skeleton Crew™ mistakenly board the Onyx Cinder, Thirty-Three is more than a little gruff. He’s used to fellows like his original captain, Tak Rennod, who ordered him to kill anyone attempting to find the lost treasure planet At Attin. Even if his programming makes it so he can’t remember no useful info most of the time, SM-33 never truly loses his head when it comes to helping out his crew.

C-3PO and R2-D2

Of course the original droid duo is on our list! C-3PO and R2-D2 are generally polite to their human comrades, preferring to keep their salty opinions in check while other beings are present. However, as soon as they are alone, the bickering begins. These two droids won’t hesitate to rip into each other regarding their woeful current situation. Plus, they constantly shift the blame to whose fault it is when they are stuck in a dire mess. Despite how much they fight, these two are inseparable companions who thrive off rattling one another in their relationship.
