Sideshow Remembers Beloved Costume Designer Shawna Trpcic

By Sideshow on Oct 9, 2023

Last week, we lost a dear friend and a true inspiration.

Shawna Trpcic was a visionary artist and costume designer whose stunning creations defined the Star Wars™ television universe.

A lifetime science fiction and comic book fan, Shawna received her first costume designer credit in 1990, and brought her indomitable style and creative energy to a score of productions (including Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Firefly, Angel, Torchwood, The Cabin in the Woods, and more) before finding a home with Lucasfilm. Shawna received multiple Emmy nominations — and has been nominated for a third time for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes (for The Mandalorian™ season 3) at the upcoming Emmys. She also was awarded the Costume Designers Guild Award for Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Television for The Book of Boba Fett™.

Considered something of a Star Wars historian* by her peers, Shawna took great pride in diligently researching the in-world lore and the design language behind every costume created for the Star Wars universe. She assembled an incredible creative team who shared her passion for world-building and attention to detail, and together they helped to define the stunning visual style that we now have come to associate with Disney Plus’ prestige Star Wars content.

Shawna was a longtime friend of Sideshow — a fellow collector and fan with a deep love of pop culture, and a joyful enthusiasm for seeing costumes reproduced in miniature.

“Shawna loved seeing her work (and the work of her friends and peers) replicated in smaller scales for figures and statues. She wore her fandom proudly on her sleeve, and owned numerous Hot Toys and Sideshow collectibles. It was wonderful to see her shift between the analytical creative designer, studying every fold and drape of fabric, and fussing with the little details, and then joyfully playing with the figures, posing Fennec Shand alongside her favorite Barbie doll.

Shawna deeply loved her team, and had a huge amount of admiration for George, Dave, Jon, Doug, and all of the visionaries at Lucasfilm. Her pride, her professionalism, her respect for her peers, her dedication and commitment to excellence, and her unwavering love for Star Wars, were a true inspiration — and her impact on many of us here at Sideshow was profound. She was family, and she will be dearly missed.”
– Andy Smith, Sideshow PR Manager

Shawna is survived by her son Joseph and daughter Sarah. A Go Fund Me has been created by Shawna’s friend and team-member, Elissa Alcala, to help Shawna’s family.

Our thoughts go out to Shawna’s family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time.
