Chill out and get set for the season with Star Wars™. While we all know about Life Day, winter isn’t only about holidays and gatherings. Some other, smaller traditions include making snow angels and snowmen, sledding, carving ice sculptures, and more. As December blows more snowstorms across planet Earth, it’s time to break out those fluffy boots and puffy coats. Maybe even dress those sixth scale figures for the occasion.

Then, find a few seasonal shows and movies to match that outdoor aesthetic! Step into frozen, sci-fi wonderlands with snowy scenes, icy planets, and cold-weather creatures from across the galaxy far, far away.

“Trespass” (The Clone Wars™)

On Orto Plutonia, Anakin Skywalker and his Master Obi-Wan Kenobi investigate the disappearance of clone troopers. An ice world makes an excellent setting for the mystery/political thriller that this episode ends up being. Torn between the conflict of the Talz natives and the Senate’s interests, the Jedi must skillfully navigate their role as peacekeepers. Tensions are only heightened by low visibility, unfamiliar territory, and scalding stakes.

Ilum (Jedi: Fallen Order™)

Long ago, the Jedi used Ilum to harvest crystals for their Lightsabers. The ancient planet hosts a Jedi Temple from the dawn of the Order itself, encased by the frozen fortress of icicle-like walls. Jedi initiates brave biting winds in order to undergo a rite of passage: collecting their own Ilum crystal, attuned to their unique Force presence. Ahsoka Tano and Yoda accompany Younglings to Ilum in The Clone Wars. Later, Cal Kestis also visits the caves on his own in the video game Jedi: Fallen Order.

Hoth (The Empire Strikes Back™)

Hoth is the ultimate Star Wars snow planet. Remote, frigid, and filled with untold dangers such as the Wampa, it’s the perfect Rebel hideout. But it’s also terribly difficult to traverse (except for specially equipped snowtroopers). Luke Skywalker, for instance, gets stranded after his Tauntaun dies en route to Echo Base. But thanks to quick thinking on Han Solo’s part, and a few ace pilots, the young Jedi lives to fight another day against Darth Vader and his invading Imperial forces.

Vulptex (The Last Jedi™)

Despite its snowy appearance, the mineral world of Crait is actually covered in layers of white salt. Like Hoth, the previously uninhabited planet makes an ideal outpost for underground militaries. Anyone walking the barren surface can also see cute, crystalline creatures called Vulptex. These “ice foxes” are friendly, but of course don’t stick around for the fateful confrontation between Kylo Ren, the First Order, and the Resistance.

“The Passenger” (The Mandalorian™)

Not all ice creatures are cute and fluffy. In The Mandalorian, bounty hunter Din Djarin and foundling Grogu encounter hundreds of krykna spiders. Aggressive and territorial, these giant insects boast multiple legs and snapping fangs. They dwell in dark, cold caves. And because they multiply so fast and live in colonies, they make an incredibly difficult enemy to defeat. Mando has to use a lot of jet fuel and firepower to save his son from their webs.

Carlac (The Acolyte™)

The mountainous planet Carlac first appears in season 4, episode 14 of The Clone Wars. During that era, radical Mandalorians overtook Carlac’s peaceful Ming Po people, settling it as a Death Watch camp. Pre Vizsla brought only ruin to the planet. In The Acolyte pilot, Mae crash lands on its desolate surface. Seeking shelter in the ice-covered caverns, she navigates an unforgiving glacial landscape and intense storms as she flees her Jedi pursuers.

Carbonite (The Empire Strikes Back)

We have carbon-freezing to thank for one of the greatest Star Wars scenes of all time. (You know.) First shown in Bespin/Cloud City, the industrial process uses highly pressurized gases to solidify equipment or prisoners. After Lando Calrissian betrays his allies to the Empire, Leia Organa and Chewbacca are forced to watch their friend get frozen alive. Other Star Wars series, including The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian, pay homage to the iconic carbonite procedure.
