Star Wars Turns 40- Remembering Carrie Fisher Then and Now

On May 25th, 2017, the Star Wars saga officially turns 40 years old. Vanity Fair recently released pictures both in honor of the franchise’s milestone year and in anticipation of the upcoming Episode VIII: The Last Jedi film at the end of the year. These photos capture stunning shots of the cast of the newest installment, while also echoing back to the days gone by.

As most everyone knows, the Star Wars universe lost a bright star when Carrie Fisher passed away at the end of 2016. Fans are fortunate, though, that renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz captured some stunning moments with the princess-turned-general before she became one with the living Force.

Now comparisons are being drawn between some of the newer photos and older promotional content from the franchise.  These photographs recall Carrie’s days as a young, rebellious Princess Leia, while also showing her poised, graceful portrayal of General Leia Organa.

Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher have of course played the iconic sibling duo of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, and Episode VIII is hoped to be an on-screen reunion of the heroes, now turned into mentor figures for the young upstarts of the galaxy including Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron.

Fisher and Hamill have been featured in plenty of side-by-sides over the course of the original trilogy, and Annie Leibovitz captured this beautiful moment between the two for Vanity Fair’s feature on the new trilogy.

Comparisons have also arisen between images of Fisher and Harrison Ford, Han Solo, from the end of the original trilogy and the beginning of the sequel trilogy.

Their characters have had one of the more famous galactic romances, and many fans were gratified to see that the pair of Princess Leia and Han Solo still had their classic banter to share even during the stressful events of The Force Awakens.

After losing their son to the Dark Side, it would be easy for these two to lose their signature spark, but it made them shine even brighter as the actors continued to build on their incredible legacy- a legacy which Fisher got to share with her daughter in the newest trilogy.

Carrie brought a certain class and dignity to the role while also injecting humor, wit, and attitude in a way that only she could. While it may be hard to believe that Star Wars is stepping into its 40th anniversary without her, Carrie’s presence and power will be felt through the Force for generations to come.  To us, she is always royalty, and these photos serve to honor her memory in that perfectly regal way.
