What Does The Flash Post-Credits Scene Mean for the DCU?

WB Discovery and DC Comics released Andy Muschietti’s The Flash this weekend. The film made massive multiversal changes to the DCEU and the DCU as a whole. Previously, the DC Extended Universe was the name for the shared cinematic universe of the Justice League and their fellow characters. However, James Gunn and Peter Safran have since taken over and rebranded it as the DC Universe.

Fans were uncertain about what would change in the DCU and what would remain the same. Luckily, the post-credits scene from The Flash gives us a glimpse at the answer.

What Happens in The Flash Post-Credits Scene?

Once all the credits have rolled, we see Barry Allen bracing Arthur Curry’s weight as he stumbles out of a bar. Suffice it to say, Aquaman is drunk. All the while, Barry is trying to explain the universe he originated from. There are lots of similarities. Aquaman was still King of Atlantis and he even had all the same powers!

Luckily, in this new universe, it seems that the Justice League still exists. So, Aquaman attempts to understand while Barry explains the differences between the new and old timelines in simple terms. It’s similar, but it’s different. That’s about as much as Aquaman can understand before passing out in a murky puddle just a block from Barry’s house. Rest up, Arthur.

What The Flash Post-Credits Scene Means

Clearly, we’re not in Kansas anymore. That is, Barry Allen altered the entire Multiverse and the effects are more messy than a bowl of Bruce Wayne’s spaghetti. Plus, when Barry returns to the present, Batman now appears to be George Clooney’s Batman from Batman and Robin.

Honestly, there’s no telling who or what else has been permanently changed. However, we can safely assume that Barry Allen has learned his lesson after the escapades of the film. It doesn’t seem that he’s racing back in time to change what happened. Instead, The Flash will live with the memories of the past and do his best moving forward.

What We Can Expect from the DCU

There’s no way to know for certain all of the little details that slipped through the cracks or changed following Barry Allen’s meddling. However, The Flash film certainly opened up the DC  Multiverse for James Gunn to play with. Any expectations that we had about the DCEU can certainly be left behind.

As a result, the stories of Zack Snyder’s  Justice League just might not be true or canon anymore. We already know for certain that James Gunn is casting new actors to play Clark Kent and Lois Lane for Superman: Legacy. Truly, there’s no telling what this new Multiverse has to offer.
