The Joker Steals the Show at the Golden Globes

In 2019, audiences loved Todd Phillips’ film Joker, which explored the origins of the fan-favorite Batman villain in a new and exciting way. Many Sideshow staffers felt that this movie was a masterpiece. We clearly weren’t the only ones.

As one of the last comic book movies of the 2019 cinematic season, Joker really went out with a BANG! Yesterday at the 2020 Golden Globes ceremony, Joker won two of these prestigious awards, officially making it the first comic book inspired movie to do so.

Joaquin Phoenix, who played Arthur Fleck, won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama. From his iconic laughter to every show-stopping punchline, he brought forth this hauntingly unique character. Director Todd Phillips believes that every character runs in a unique way. Phoenix created Arthur Fleck’s run, and performed it so well that even the stunt doubles could not imitate the motion. His work on this film stood out not only to audiences, but to the awards committee who recognized Phoenix’s intense commitment to the role.

Composer Hildur Gudnadóttir also received a Golden Globe for Best Original Score. Gudnadóttir finalized the soundtrack before filming, which is atypical for a modern motion picture. Phillips, however, wanted to play the music while filming, saying that, “Arthur has music in his soul.” He wanted The Joker’s every movement to be musical. Gudnadóttir made that happen.

Congratulations to all the people who worked on the film, and congratulations to the fans. With comic book movies being recognized at the Golden Globes and other Hollywood awards ceremonies, we can expect to see more ambitious and diverse geek films in the future.
