Artist Interview: Alex Garant

Tell us a bit about where you’re from, and some of your proudest achievements in your career as an artist?

I am originally from Quebec City. I now reside in Toronto, Canada. There are some career milestones in the life of an artist I was very happy to achieve, from taking my first oil painting class at 7 years old, graduating first of class in Art school as a young adult, my first solo show as an artist, to working on my art on a full time basis. I feel like there are so many moments that led me to who and where I am now. I am every day humbled and thankful to be part of the creative community.

You have an incredibly unique approach to portraiture; how did you come to be known in the pop-surrealism world as the “Queen of Double Eyes”?

Well, a long time ago I was working on traditional portraits, but I was always fascinated by symmetry, patterns, and mirroring images. As I was experimenting with sketches in my studio, I started overlapping items and to me, the vibrating effects really represent that aspect of human duality. That battle between your inner self and outer self. The person one is when by him/herself at home, versus the persona we have the tendency to project to the outside world.

I want my painting to push the viewer to solve the visual image as well as the storytelling aspect of each individual painted. As per the infamous ” Queen of Double Eyes” nickname, an artist friend of mine called me that as we were opening a group show together as I was presenting my early works in that series.

Can you describe your process for organizing your compositions, and achieving your surreal signature effect?

Absolutely. When it comes to creating a new painting, I like to do a lot of prep work, I have a database of reference on my computer, model references I photographed myself, remotely acquired poses from model friends, and some stock photos if I need something specific. I will then draw a sketch based on those references and adjust as needed.

Then I will transfer my sketch onto the canvas by either using a projector or tracing paper (just to help myself get a bigger version of the original sketch while keeping my proportions), then I will recreate that sketch twice. Once the main shapes and shadows are established, I start painting with oil paint. I try to do most of the work alla prima or wet-on-wet when possible and will be working on one section at the time for that reason.

What materials do you prefer to work with?

I am a huge fan of Gamblin oil paint and simple synthetic brushes.

You seemed to be very familiar with, if not a fan of, Doctor Strange before taking on this project. Was there anything you found particularly fun or challenging in your approach to this character?

I love the idea of using the comic book version as a muse, so the 1963 costume was a big inspiration for this piece. I wanted to represent my version of this mystic character. I wanted to stay loyal to my style but also bring colorful elements to the portrait’s surroundings. My usual compositions are often minimalist in form and color, so it was very exciting to bring some magic and movement into my work!
