No matter what happens up on the surface, the power of Atlantis will always rise again. Just as the tides are inevitable, the power brewing beneath the waves is a force that cannot be stopped. And nobody knows this better than Arthur Curry, AKA Aquaman.

Of course, Arthur doesn’t embrace his role right away. He barely wanted to join Batman’s Justice League. But by the end of the first Aquaman movie, a new hero has swirled from the depths to the screen. Throughout the film, many characters talk about mercy and the unforgiving power of the ocean. It seems to be a core value among the people of Atlantis, no doubt because they have weathered the forces of the deep for eons. Even Arthur Curry, who did not grow up in Atlantis, knows that the sea’s mercy is a rare thing. And for a villain like Black Manta, that mercy is never promised.

Orm is Arthur’s half-brother through Queen Atlanna. All his life, he has resented Arthur. Now, with Arthur’s return to Atlantis, it’s finally his chance to eliminate the one person who threatens his claim to the throne.

Mera is more of a by-the-book kind of hero. It takes a lot for her to break the rules. Arthur, on the other hand, is a go-with-the-flow kind of guy. He makes his moves up right on the spot — and this definitely stresses Mera out from time to time. Eventually, they learn to balance each other out but at first, it’s a bit of a learning curve for these two.

In saving Arthur from trial combat with Orm, Mera is also exiled from Atlantis for treason. Though she knows her decision was right, that doesn’t make it any easier to live with. This heartbreaking quote shows that often the heroic thing to do is not the easy thing to do — but that’s what makes the decision all the more admirable.

On the other hand, sometimes even heroes make reckless choices. Mera can’t believe it when she learns that Arthur risked their lives based on a daring move from a children’s book. It’s one thing to zoom away in an Atlantean ship, but to use a whale as a hiding spot? Now that’s pushing it. Even if it did work for Pinocchio.

Every super hero must embark on their own journey to discover who they are and what kind of hero they aspire to be. Of course, some would-be heroes are a little more resistant than others. Arthur has trouble accepting that he is meant to be a hero, let alone a king. But he has his mother, Queen Atlanna, to help set him on the right path with her wise words.
