What is Be@rbrick?

By Andrew Ceco on Jun 29, 2021

At the crossroads of pop culture and vinyl collectibles, fashion makes a fusion with fun. Introducing Be@rbrick, a series of unexpected and absolutely charming collectibles that’s constantly providing new ways for fans to connect with and collect their favorite characters.

But what exactly is Be@rbrick? And what makes them stand out?

Who created Be@rbricks?

Be@rbricks are created by the Japanese company Medicom Toy. The company started making limited edition collectibles in 1996. One of their earlier collectible lines was called the Kubrick, as an homage to director Stanley Kubrick.

These particular Kubrick collectibles included the Japanese word “ku” which means nine. Nine is an important number in the Be@rbrick community. Both the Kubrick line and Be@rbricks have 9 parts, with moving joints. The main difference between the two collectible lines is their underlying design. The Kubrick line was made to look like humans, and naturally, the Be@rbrick line is made to look more like a bear.

The very first Be@rbrick collectible premiered on May 27, 2001. And since then, they’ve rocketed in popularity and collectibility.

What makes Be@rbrick so special?

Nearly every line of Be@rbrick collectible is limited edition. That means that by design, there’s only a certain amount of every single collectible that they make, ensuring a constant flow of new product. Medicom Toy releases two new Series every year. Within each Series, there are four different Types.

The Types are: Basic, Standard, Artist, and Secret. Basic Types are 9 different designs that each feature one letter of the name of the brand. When collected together, they spell out Be@rbrick. Standard Types each have different themes. The Artist Type is a collaboration between Medicom and a featured artist, including the most unexpected of artists like Andy Warhol Be@rbricks and H.R. Giger Be@rbricks. The Secret Type is completely unpredictable and extremely rare.

Not only that, but Be@rbricks come in a wide variety of sizes. The original Be@rbrick was a simple white bear that measured 70 mm tall. This became the standard size of the products, and they called it the 100%. All other sizes that were released were measured in relation to the standard size. The 50% size is often released as keychains, since they are only 35 mm tall. They have also released 70%, 200%, 400%, and even 1000%. These 700 mm tall Be@rbricks are massive and tend to be collectible statues.

While Be@rbricks have been influenced by modern media, they’ve also been influencers in their own right. They have had a notable role in streetwear circles. Art imitates life, and life imitates art. Be@rbrick has been and will continue to be a large part of that cycle.

Where can I buy Be@rbricks?

Be@rbricks of all shapes, sizes, and fandoms can be purchased directly from Sideshow. Just as described above, the Standard Types in each series come with different (often recurring) themes. In Series 21, Be@rbrick introduced a new theme called “Hero” which featured a variety of characters from some of your favorite DC Comics. There are “Hero” Be@rbricks like The Joker, Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, and more.

Not only that, but our Be@rbrick collectibles dive into other pop culture as well. There are Disney collectibles like the Be@rbrick Wall-E, the Be@rbrick Eve, and even the Be@rbrick Jack Skellington. Be@rbrick also offers a The Simpsons Cyclops to a Be@rbrick Homelander from The Boys, and everything in between.
