Who is Fennec Shand™?

A cunning and ruthless mercenary, Fennec Shand™ worked during the rise of the Galactic Empire. She was a bounty hunter by trade, active in the criminal underworld and renowned for her skills, though ultimately she led a life on the run after the downfall of many of her employers.

Because of her fraught Star Wars™ history, Fennec Shand was initially introduced as an antagonist in The Mandalorian™. Her story became so much more than that of a gun-for-hire, however. So ahead of her vital role in Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett™, let’s break down this character, her narrative, and her motivations in a galaxy far, far away.

The Bad Batch™

One of Fennec Shand’s most critical missions is shown in Star Wars: The Bad Batch. Tasked with bringing in Omega™, Fennec finds the clone girl on the planet Pantora™. She gains Omega’s trust by giving her stolen fruit and mentoring her about street rules. When Omega’s warden, Clone Force 99™ member Hunter™, arrives, Fennec opens fire. After hand-to-hand combat and a high-stakes speeder chase, Fennec still hasn’t captured Omega but she ensures her Kaminoan™ employers that she won’t give up.

Continuing her hunt, Fennec ends up fighting another bounty hunter by the name of Cad Bane™. Fennec’s mission changes to keeping Omega away from Bane’s more nefarious schemes, and she inadvertently succeeds when the Bad Batch ends up rescuing Omega amid the firefight. Although she offers go after the clones for extra credits, Fennec’s employer considers the job complete; Fennec is paid and goes on her way. Her life and career after earn her a notorious reputation as one of the most elite and expensive bounty hunters in the galaxy.

The Mandalorian

In Star Wars: The Mandalorian season 1, Din Djarin™ is tasked with taking down New Republic enemy Fennec Shand. He and rookie bounty hunter Toro Calican™ track Fennec to the desert planet of Tatooine™. Even against a team of two trained bounty hunters, Fennec is capable and far more competent. She keeps the upper hand as well as the high ground. Her abilities as a sniper make the Mandalorian’s job far more difficult than he expected, and it is only with luck and flash grenades that they manage to subdue this master mercenary.

Thus, eventually Fennec is taken captive. She attempts to turn Calican against the Mandalorian, but the young bounty hunter shoots Fennec in the stomach with his blaster after taking her advice about surviving in their dangerous profession. Unconscious and abandoned to die, Fennec’s life ebbs away while the twin suns rise. She is then discovered by Boba Fett™. He saves her life, and the two form a loyal, lasting partnership.

To save Fennec’s life, Boba Fett replaces the interior of her lower abdomen — the part that was shot and mangled beyond repair — with cybernetics. Indebted to him, Fennec joins Boba on his quest to reclaim his father’s stolen Mandalorian armor. But when they confront Cobb Vanth™ about Jango Fett’s™ beskar, they discover Din Djarin has reclaimed that armor, entangling their narratives with our titular hero’s once more.

On the planet Tython™, Fennec Shand aims her sniper scope at Grogu™. Instead of choosing violence, though, Boba Fett, the Mandalorian, and Fennec Shand are able to compromise before Moff Gideon’s™ Imperial remnant attacks. With Grogu captured, the newly founded team join forces in the hopes of rescuing The Child. After their successful mission, Boba Fett and Fennec Shand return to Tatooine.

There, they ransack Jabba’s Palace. Fennec personally executes many of Bib Fortuna’s™ guards, and then frees an enslaved woman who had been chained to the throne. In their final appearance (so far) in The Mandalorian series, Boba Fett sits upon the throne and Fennec Shand raises a bottle of spotchka™ to celebrate their victory. This sets up the plot for…

The Book of Boba Fett

In The Book of Boba Fett, Fennec Shand will act as ally and most likely a bit of a bodyguard for Boba Fett. Based on the first trailer, the two are back on Tatooine to take over Jabba the Hutt’s™ old territory. Their goal is to control that area in the wake of the Empire, leading lawless lives yet setting rules and standards for the criminal underworld that resides on the harsh desert planet. Whether or not they will be successful remains to be seen — but if Fennec’s impressive track record is any indication, we can expect great things from her.
