Wolverine’s Deadpool 3 Costume and Other Iconic Outfits

Spiky hair, sharp claws, and a grizzled snarl — that’s right, bub. Wolverine is back in town.

Just like many of his fellow X-Men, Wolverine has undergone multiple transformations over the decades. From his Marvel comics debut in Incredible Hulk #180 (1974) to his future live-action appearance in Deadpool 3, Wolverine is an immortal fan-favorite — pretty much literally.

In honor of Hugh Jackman’s comics-accurate Wolverine costume in Deadpool 3 and the recent Wolverine figure released by HONŌ Studio, let’s take a look back at Wolverine’s most iconic costumes.

Wolverine’s First Appearance in Incredible Hulk #180

Wolverine’s fierce reputation first came into play with this prototype version of his signature striped costume. The classic colors are all there but the biggest difference in this first outfit is the hero’s mask.

There’s much more yellow than black when it comes to Wolverine’s eye area in this initial design from John Romita, Sr. It’s a distinctive look that always signals The Wolverine’s early days. Later, when Professor X recruits Wolverine in Giant Size X-Men #1 (1975), cover artist Gil Kane drew the black brows even bigger, which Dave Cockrum adapted into Wolverine’s regular design.

Brown & Tan Wolverine

Beginning in the Uncanny X-Men era, this John Byrne design gave Wolverine’s look a shift in color. As Wolverine explored more of his past with Alpha Flight and evolved as a hero, so did his suit. This costume does not feature his regular torso stripes, and there are no shoulder pads. The overall effect is something more natural that further highlights Wolverine’s earthy, primal nature.

Ronin Wolverine

Since he has lived for so long, Wolverine has truly led many different lives. One of his most well-known periods is the time he spent in Japan. There, he fell in love with Mariko Yashida, cousin of his former teammate Sunfire and a member of a Yakuza family. During this time, Logan met his mentor Ogun and gained new adversaries, like Silver Samurai and Lady Deathstrike.

Days of Future Past Wolverine

Of course, nothing could beat Logan’s cheeky birthday suit entrance into 1973, but his retro civilian outfit is a tight second. Louise Mingenbach’s eye for detail shines through in an outfit that is inspired by Wolverine’s appearance in the film’s namesake comic story, Days of Future Past.

Shaggier sideburns, worn leather jacket, plus a stylish patterned shirt — we can dig it.

’90s Wolverine

Iconic, no notes, pure genius. Many X-fans have this yellow-and-blue image of Wolverine slashed into their brains, and for good reason. Jim Lee’s unforgettable X-Men designs took the mutants’ already eye-catching costumes and turned them up a notch.

Though he also sported his brown and yellow outfit in the ’90s, this period is most closely associated with the bold yellow and blue. If you think about it, these bright colors might be an odd choice for a hero with such a dark past. However, Wolverine has never been one to stay in the shadows. These colors bring him front and center for a fastball special.

Canadian Wolverine

This one’s for the Logan on the go. As is often his way, Wolverine is fond of speeding off on his motorcycle, usually to remote forests covered in snow. When he’s making an escape from life with a team, he usually wears this jeans, white tank, and brown leather jacket combo. It’s hard to tame all of that fury but retreating to the wilderness gives him a chance to run free.

Astonishing Wolverine

In a new era for mutants, Wolverine’s suit received a sleek update. John Cassaday took the hero’s classic outfit and removed the blue briefs while redesigning the shoulder pads and mask wings for a more understated look. With occasional accents like brown combat boots and a brown belt (plus that pop of red with the team’s X-logo) this modern Wolverine look is a frequent favorite for Logan fans.

HONŌ Studio Wolverine

Finally, one of the most recent Wolverine redesigns is an homage to his most striking comic book features. HONŌ Studio has created a Wolverine sixth scale figure with every attribute fans have come to know and love over the past decades. His outfit has bright colors, razor sharp details like his face mask and extended Adamantium claws, plus a vicious snarl aimed at his worst enemies.
