He’s the best there is at what he does … and often that includes making enemies. Every major super hero has their own set of villains but for Wolverine, his enemies are quite personal. All are tied to his past in painful ways that even a healing factor can’t always fix.

In his Marvel Comics debut, Wolverine fought against the Hulk in the Canadian wilderness. Over the years, Logan has certainly clashed with his fellow X-Man Cyclops. And given his metallic skeleton, Wolverine has of course been the target of Magneto. However, there are five super-villains from Marvel history who will always give Wolverine a reason to bring those claws out. SNIKT!

Romulus

• Real Name: Unknown
• Place of Origin: Unknown
• Affiliations: Weapon X, The Lupine, Professor Thorton, Daken

All it takes is one look at Romulus and you can see the Wolverine connection right away. Visually, they share striking similarities. As one of the major figures behind the Weapon X program, Romulus is a nefarious mastermind who operates from the shadows. Weapon X is also where James Howlett/Logan ended, and Wolverine truly began.

There had already been many failures in creating the perfect superhuman, since Weapon X is the tenth iteration of the Weapon Plus Program. After all, chasing the success of Project: Rebirth’s Captain America is a tall order. Yet Romulus certainly tried, taking a bit of inspiration from Mister Sinister’s horrific genetic experiments and also employing his own mad scientist, Dr. Thorton. Romulus also concocted a web of lies about being the progenitor of a feral race called the Lupine. In reality, he was merely a talented manipulator who molded Logan in his own wild image, twisting him into a living weapon, and even creating Sabretooth clones and abducting Logan’s son Daken at birth.

Lady Deathstrike

• Real Name: Yuriko Oyama
• Place of Origin: Japan
• Powers/Abilities: Adamantium claws, Adamantium-reinforced skeleton, healing factor

Claws are a bit of a pattern with Wolverine enemies, it seems. Yuriko Oyama is the daughter of a cruel Japanese crime lord. Her father scarred Yuriko and her brothers to match his own shameful war scars, and he’s also the man who developed the science behind bonding Adamantium to human skeletons. Oyama Heavy Industries helped pave the way for the experiments that would continue to haunt Wolverine for the rest of his (long) life.

Speaking of longterm struggles, Yuriko first let herself become consumed with hatred for her father. After his death, she transferred this single-minded vengefulness onto Wolverine. With samurai training and a new name, Lady Deathstrike, she hunted Wolverine across the globe. Eventually, Mojo’s personal assassin Spiral operated on Lady Deathstrike and gave her those signature Adamantium claws plus a healing factor. Since then, Lady Deathstrike has led the mutant-hunting cyborgs known as the Reavers and also clashed with Laura Kinney, AKA X-23.

Omega Red

• Real Name: Arkady Gregorivich Rossovich
• Place of Origin: Russia
• Powers/Abilities: Carbonadium tentacles, death spores, life-force absorption

Even before his time as a mutant cyborg super-villain, Arkady Rossovich was a vile man who committed despicable acts. Only his execution, which he survived due to a latent mutation, spurred the USSR to use him as a Super Soldier test subject. After tortuous experimentation, Arkady transformed into Omega Red.

While Wolverine and others use the more stable metal known as Adamantium, Omega Red was bonded with radioactive Carbonadium. Due to the metal’s unstable nature, Omega Red must consume the life-force of others to sustain his own health. Only a concoction called Carbonadium Synthesizer could stabilize his condition, but Wolverine, Sabretooth, and Maverick hid the last of this material from Omega Red. For that reason, he’s always hunted Wolverine under the assumption he can extract the C-Synth’s location. Over the years, Omega Red has often been a tool of destruction. He once possessed the mind of Wolverine’s wife, Itsu, and he even aligned himself with Dracula to finally obtain C-Synth and work as a double agent on Krakoa’s X-Force team.

Mystique

• Real Name: Raven Darkhölme
• Place of Origin: Unknown
• Powers/Abilities: Molecular-level shapeshifting

When you’ve lived as long as these two, it’s a given that paths will cross. Wolverine and Mystique first met in the early 20th-century, escaping death and becoming lovers. They were also lovers in the House of M reality. Of course, Mystique’s nature is to betray and the same inevitably happened to Wolverine. Decades later, following M-Day, Cyclops would assign Wolverine with the task to kill Mystique.

How much of their past together was orchestrated by Weapon X? It’s unclear. But Mystique surely hooked up with Sabretooth at least, in part, to hurt Wolverine. Needless to say, these two mutants are constantly entangled. In many ways, they’re similar. Each bristles at the thought of working too closely with others, yet they’ve always found themselves on powerful teams. At their core, they’re loners who secretly desire companionship. Wounded hearts attract wounded hearts. Plus, Wolverine’s ability to recognize Mystique immediately, due to scent alone, always leads to creatively tense showdowns between the two.

Sabretooth

• Real Name: Victor Creed
• Place of Origin: Canada
• Powers/Abilities: Healing factor, claws, superhuman senses, strength, and stamina

Finally, there’s no way to mention Wolverine’s super hero career and not factor in Sabretooth. They’re not even two sides of the same coin — both are nearly perfectly matched in their wild natures. The only defining difference is that Wolverine usually attempts to control his feral side. He’s not always successful but compared to Sabretooth, Logan is practically a saint. And that’s what’s scary.

Thanks to Romulus, Sabretooth was there when Wolverine was created. Since then, these two men have chased each other all over the world, snarling and snapping and stabbing. It’s even a gruesome tradition for the two to fight every year on Wolverine’s birthday. Now that’s commitment to a rivalry. In fact, Sabretooth’s obsession with terrorizing Wolverine is nothing short of psychotic. He murdered Wolverine’s lover, Silver Fox, and decades later took part in Sinister’s Morlock mutant massacre. Then he later worked with Omega Red and Lady Deathstrike to murder all the people whom Wolverine loved the most, including Nightcrawler. Through death and resurrection, tense truces and feuding brotherhoods, one thing will always be true: Sabretooth’s one unfailing purpose is his hatred for Wolverine.
