Brienne of Tarth has a lineage worthy of her loyalty and love is in the air
Both George R.R. Martin and Tormund Giantsbane show their love for Brienne of Tarth
Game of Thrones‘ Brienne of Tarth (and Gwendoline Christie) has become a fan favorite over the seasons as we’ve watched her fight everything from bears to The Hound to a pack of several Bolton men. Her humble nature and fierce loyalty to both Renly Baratheon and the Stark family make her unique in a world where politics and duplicity often prevail.
However, something has changed in this new season and Brienne has become even more beloved than we thought possible thanks to author George R.R. Martin and wildling Tormund Giantsbane.
According to io9, GRRM recently revealed a backstory for Brienne at Balticon last weekend during a reading of an excerpt of the upcoming The Winds Of Winter. It seems Brienne is related to Ser Duncan The Tall –– a renowned knight who later became Commander of the Kingsguard. Martin has often cited Ser Duncan as one of his favorite characters, so giving Brienne a lineage like this is quite a compliment.
As for Tormund Giantsbane, his complete amazement at the sight of Brienne entering Castle Black has launched a ship for the ages. Tormund is enraptured and Brienne, who’s never been the subject of anything but derision in regards to how she looks, is completely confused.
It’s wonderful to watch and fans have become as besotted with this possible pairing as Tormund seems to be with Brienne.
Like we said, there’s a lot of love out there for Brienne.
