Mortal Kombat’s First 7 Minutes

WB and HBO Max released the first seven minutes of the Mortal Kombat movie. The opening scene reveals how an age-old rivalry truly began.

The trailer begins in feudal Japan with a sweet sing-song family moment with the wife and son of Hanzo Hasashi. He is a warrior who takes care of his family and his clan. But while he’s away gathering supplies for his wife, son, and newborn baby, a rival clan attacks.

His wife remarks how very cold it is inside their home. That’s when Bi-Han walks in. Even before he became Sub-Zero, Bi-Han was looking for a fight. He was looking to fight Hanzo, the legendary warrior, and end his clan’s bloodline. He uses his ice powers to kill Hanzo’s family and draw him out into the forest.

That’s when we see Hanzo use his simple gardening tools in combination with a rope to create a makeshift version of his signature kunai. In that moment, he got one step closer to becoming Scorpion. Hanzo easily dispatches the rival clan, and the seven minute clip ends right before his battle with Bi-Han.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan), accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage-or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung (Chin Han) has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) at the direction of Jax (Mehcad Brooks), a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kung Lao (Max Huang) and rogue mercenary Kano (Josh Lawson), as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana-the immense power from within his soul-in time to save not only his family but to stop Outworld once and for all?

Mortal Kombat stars Ludi Lin (Power Rangers, Aquaman) as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks (Supergirl) as Jax, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Hiroyuki Sanada (Wolverine) as Scorpion, Josh Lawson  as Kano, Tadanobu Asano (Thor) as Raiden, Joe Taslim (Star Trek) as Sub-Zero, Chin Han (The Dark Knight) as Shang Tsung, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, and Lewis Tan (Deadpool) as the new character Cole Young.

Mortal Kombat will be available both in theaters and on HBO Max on April 23rd.
